@Avgust maybe. For some, we exist because we think. For other's, it is the gaze of other people that lets us know that we exist, because through them we get outside proof of our existence.
I interpreted it to mean that people deserve the respect that they give to others, and you can't be a person if you don't acknowledge others in their own worthiness
To me, human being a social animal just means that we are beings made to live in groups. We're made to have relationships with each other, and good or bad relationships is another question.
Well, that raises the question of who ordered us to be social. It's not that God came down and told us, "you have to be social, I don't care what that means or if it good or bad, just be social."
So, i believe things like slavery is just work of some special persons, and shouldn't be used to reflect our entire species
