Typo because the pinyin is the same. I don't really see that typo often tbh, might just be the novel you're reading that the author has that problem lol

It is not a typo, the author choose 粑粑 as the substitute of 爸爸 deliberately.

literally, 粑粑 means poop. So It can't be used in any formal occasions.

粑粑 can be commonly seen in family interactions, like the girl begging his dad to buy her an ice cream or a toy.

There's a little difference in the pronounce between 爸 and 粑. "粑粑" mimicked an intonation of little kids calling their dad, or southern chinese accent (especially Taiwan and Hongkong, I think). And "粑粑" contains more emotions like begging, acting cute, coquetry, ect.

There's also laziness! 爸爸 (Bàba) takes effort. It's two different intonations. 粑粑 (Bābā) is easier since it's just flat.

直接用爸爸是尊称,指代一般父女关系。Direct use of father is honorific, referring to the general father-daughter relationship.
粑粑则是昵称或者爱称,一般非指代父女关系。It is a nickname or a pet name, which generally does not refer to the relationship between father and daughter.
