I looked into this novel too a long time ago when I wanted to translate. I probably cannot pick this one up but hopefully someone does. I'll toss the first chapter that I translated here, raw and unedited. Hope it generates some interest. Good luck!

Chapter 1 Return to the Past

In the darkness, someone was speaking.

“The weather’s so cold. Eh? There’s a small child here.”

“Oh, those clothes it’s wearing aren’t too shabby. Doesn’t seem like a beggar. How did it collapse here?”

    Poke, poke, pinch, pinch.

“What are you doing, No. 9? You aren’t a pedophile, are you?”

“Regardless of that, No. 7, look. This child’s bone structure is pretty good. We have to find one anyway so let’s bring it back instead of wasting it and leaving it to die here.”

Another round of poking and pinching.

“Not as good as can be but it’s fine if we bring it back. At any rate, he seems like he’s going to die of starvation soon. Lift him and let’s go.”

    “Okay."

    What did this mean?

    What did they mean?

    What are they talking about...

    Abruptly, he opened his eyes.

With keen senses born from long periods of training, his gaze first landed on the shaft of the gun hanging from the other party’s waist as that person leaned over him. His hand shot out without warning, snatching that person’s gun.

Instantly, the three people all froze.

The child lying the ground gripped the gun tightly with both hands; the man who was leaning down deliberately raised both his hands while the other man in blank subconsciously reached down to draw his gun. The killing intent that exploded within that instant had led them to believe they had been ambushed. But the next instant, the two men exchanged an astonished glance along with a bewildered laugh.

Because the child who was lying on the ground was truly too young and looked too weak and fragile. He had not flipped the safety catch of the gun. His fingers were struggling to even reach the trigger button.

“Wow, No. 9, your virgin experience of losing your gun has been granted to this kid haha.”

“Anyway… what agile reflexes. Almost like a wild beast. He definitely has no sense of security. We’ve found a treasure.”

“Hey kid, you don’t hold a gun like that…”

No. 7 had yet to finish his sentence when that child’s eyes flashed and he flicked open the safety catch with a finger. The sound of a gunshot.

With a “Peng --”, the bullet pierced through No. 9’s chest. Blood splattered from his back into his air. The answering momentum of the gun flung both the child’s hands backwards. That No. 7 had already reflexively drawn his gun but even in the instant he faced that child, a feeling of disbelief still lingered in his heart.

It couldn’t have been this kid. Someone must have sniped us...

This thought resulted in his slight hesitation. Soon after, another gunshot resounded. A bloody hole was opened in between No. 7’s brows as he collapsed face-down on the ground. Simultaneously, that child’s right hand had been injured. Fresh blood immediately soaked half of his body. His figure trembling amidst the river of blood, that child actually struggled to crawl up.

It was the same place he had been shot in the past, but this time… why did it hurt so much...

Nevertheless, the pain was not the biggest problem he faced. The biggest problem was, where was he? And also...

    “Such small hands…”

Gazing at his left hand that wielded the gun, he murmured to himself. This was clearly the hand of a child. Moreover, his height had also turned into the height of a midget.

The battering of the night wind was particularly chilly. He surveyed his surroundings. This was on the streets of some backwater town, with incomparably ancient architecture and sickly yellow streetlights. He could feel the strength in his body slowly sapping away. This kind of fragile body could probably not last much longer; he would drop dead soon...

Memories of the past played scene by scene in his mind. The fire phoenix had told him, “Then, you shall receive the opportunity to be free.”

    The opportunity to be free...

So many questions that could no longer be answered. In the distance, the wail of police sirens sounded. He wiped off the fingerprints on the gun’s shaft by force of habit and placed it back into No. 9’s grip. Clutching his shoulder, he stumbled a few steps before the whole sky seemed to start spinning.

Amidst the haze, he thought of his childhood.

In reality, his memories only started from when he was 10 years old because 10 years was the usual age that Pei Luo Xi began to train its assassins. What happened before that, he had neither any recollections nor any hints.

Later, of course, he would find out that every child who had been taken in by Pei Luo Xi would be wiped of their memories. If this kind of brainwashing technique had been undone straight away, there was a possibility of retaining some memory. But by the time he had uncovered the truth, there was already no point in that. The truth had served only to strengthen his resolution to defect.

From the time he had been 10, he had watched various animals slaughter each other every day while being taught the fundamentals of becoming an assassin between that. Soon after, starting with a knife, came the death battles with some animals, elimination, and then fights between each other. He had never been the most exceptional of the bunch but it had been him who had survived. What a miracle. Of course, perhaps by then he had already been destined to the fate of betrayal, because his heart had never been peaceful.

This stretch of memory had not been touched for a long long time. Yet at this moment, it surfaced clearly in his mind. In the darkness, that continuously struggling girl slightly revealed her small swollen face.

“Please, don’t kill me, please, don’t kill me…”

    Suddenly, he opened his eyes.

He deliberately extended a hand to feel his waist area but his right hand was instantly struck by a wave of agony. He raised his left hand and stared at it repeatedly.

    “I’ve really become a child…”

His hand explored the skin around his waist. The scar that was once the remains of a moment of soft-heartedness had disappeared. That had been the first time in his life that he had killed somebody, and also the first time he had received an injury. Now, even that scar was gone.

He surveyed the area around him. This was, in his opinion, a rather old-fashioned hospital ward. The time was roughly approaching twilight. As he gazed out of the window from where he was seated, the setting sun shone crimson, and nothing but a swathe of old buildings met his gaze. A small calendar from which pages were torn daily was mounted on the white wall close to him. The latest page: 3rd November 1991.

He only furrowed his brows without being overly surprised. Then, a bland smile appeared on his face that gradually widened a split second later. He closed his mouth, wracked with silent laughter that shook his entire body.

    Freedom, reincarnation...

It was at this moment that he understood.

In hindsight, his first memory had been of November 1991 when he had just begun his training in Pei Luo Xi. The two people named No. 9 and No. 7 from that evening must have been the assassins who had sent him to Pei Luo Xi. Only, in his previous life, he had not known anything about that. In this life, the fact that he had woken up earlier had changed everything.

His shoulder that was still wrapped in gauze ached slightly but to the him right now, this pain was nothing at all. He opened the drawer next to the hospital bed with great effort, trying to find anything that could confirm his current identity. But in the drawer, there were only two sets of clothes, a thermos bento box and a few fruits. He considered this briefly before crawling to the end of the bed. Sure enough, there hung his identification sign.

    Gu Jiaming.

What a traditional, boring name. The corners of his lips curled upwards into a smile.

But irregardless, he finally found his own name. A faint wisp of warmth welled up within him. In the midst of his melancholy, the door to his ward opened with a creak. The person who walked in was, unexpectedly, a little girl carrying a backpack, adorned with two pigtails and a melon-shaped face. How very cute.

“Ah? Jiaming, you’re awake?” The moment that girl saw him, she rushed over to his bedside with a smile and plopped down her bag. He purposefully wrapped his blanket around his body as the girl extended a hand towards him. Fortunately, she only lightly brushed against his bandages. “Does it still hurt? Are you better? Ah, wait a bit, I’ll call Aunty Nurse here.”

The moment she had spoken, she was out of his ward like a gust of wind. The child on the bed smiled slightly as his gaze fell on that girl’s large backpack.

There were four large words sewn on with red thread: Hong Xing Elementary School.

Following those three words were what appeared to be that girl’s name: Ye Lingjing.
