Discussion A bit weird in reading translated novel

you know, it's always feels weird when reading translated novel, that's the language barrier. Have you encounter something like this?

For me it's ISSTH, the weird thing is "a boom filled the air", I know it's just sfx. But when you think it normally what's a boom? It's feel funny (No, I'm not critizing to the translator&editor, I really appreciate their works, I just want to know what other feels about it.)

 

Then read the original. Problem solved.

 

For me "boom" it's the sound of an explosion.
In novels I get used to most things, but I still find the whole "giving face to someone" weird.

Never had any language barrier problems. I think of boom as an explosive sound or the same sound a wrecking ball makes I guess.

Is it? The English meaning of saving face is pretty similar. Saving face is to avoid getting humiliated, giving face is to perform an action or compromise to prevent someone else from getting humiliated right?

I can help you with that one, imagine for just a second you are in school, don't you usually call your teacher Sir or Mister? You usually don't just call him by his given name because of "supposedly" respect maybe you don't intend to but by doing this you are giving your teacher face or how we say in english showing respect.

 

Usually when I see 'boom' in a novel the MC just had a breakthrough so that has become the norm for me. In contrast when 'boom' is shown and no breakthrough occurs then it feels weird to me

 

To be honest, I find that English is much more weirder. For a example, the phrase as dead as a door nail. What the hell is that supposed to mean?!!! Door nails were never alive to begin with, so how did they end up dead?!!!!

 

So what we do by calling sir or madam is unconsciously giving face?

 

Probably they mean it's fixed at that place.

Edit: this is the first I read as "dead as door nail", it's funny why did they mention door nail not other furniture.

 

I do know the meaning but there are no similar expressions in my language, so sometimes when I see it I end up imagining someone passing a face to some else.

 

really? you have a problem with the SFX stuff but not the weird expressions like " old man, stop spouting farts" or, " you arent even worth half a fart" or their odd obsession with face? and not just that or sentences using the word fart either. there are others.

That is because our society no longer runs on a system similar, though if you look towards holidays it can be seen. These days as always one must have money and connections to prosper. For most commoners, sending gifts to your boss, showing up for someones birthday party, helping them move. These days are about the same as giving face. After all you wish to keep on friendly terms for some reason or another. This is what giving face is, the more power someone has the more them being your friend or owing a favor can produce big benefits for you. In high society, especially aristocratic ones, ones appearance is huge noone wants to deal with someone who may betray them after all. To prosper they must make good relations, and the simplest way is simply to 'give face'. Essentially meaning they owe you a favor in some way or another.
Quite literally all for appearance sake hence 'face'

 

I don't have a problem with this. Probably got used to it after reading MGA, ATG, PMG and a few other novels that frequently use the term but if you look at the context it's not impossible to understand what it means.

 

You get used to it...just accept it and move on...

 

Ummm, to me, face simply encompasses everything from respect to social status to similar ideas. It's just an all-in-one word, sort of.

@Sproutling can you find me the boom chapter? I wanna read it, lol. Sounds so funny.
