Depends on the setting. The modern or isekai novels? Sure. Xianxia or CN fantasy? Oh well.

Because most of the online novels are written by middle schoolers - in mind, if not in body. (Not all, there are some pearls.)

 

Hmm... doesn't someone usually become that cold after something happened and they HAVE to survive alone, tho? Not because it's an option for them, but the only way.

 

I wouldn't say that. Many people simply started with JP and got sick of the "gullible nice guy MC" and then see the crazy psycho killer CN MC and it appeals. After a while you get over that fad as the JPness wears off and notice the CN cold serial killer MC isn't that great either.

As most people said, the preferable MC is one in the middle who can be kind but stern when needed.

 

Rather than pick between the two, I'd rather have a smart MC. Not smart coz the author says so but that their actions prove their intellect. I don't even mind high IQ over EQ. Logic driven protags make for an interesting read overall.

 

Don't expect these authors to write characters with real personalities.

 

This is why cold mc feels like robots. Unless they have a good reason and story to back it up.

I don't mind amoral MC as long as they don't say too much BS about the righteous being hypocrites all the time (real amoral characters never care about that crap, only hypocritical bully). I have seen many fictions where the bad guys always say BS like the strong ruled over the weak when they were in power, but keep complaining about how the other side is hypocrite once they were the losers, while never hesitate to be a bully once they gain power.

I also dislike how restrained the righteous have to be against their f-up enemies.

Yeah, the world isn't just black and white, but screw everyone for keep using that crap forever!

 

Either of the two is fine, but too much of coldness or kindness is stupid. Coldness sometimes relates to a character's ability to be logical in thinking. It doesn't have to that's he'd be a goody-two-shoes, but sending someone to their death just because he/she's someone related is stupid, illogical, and proves that's you have a coocoo in the head. I'm not saying letting go of relatives is good too. But making them pay for crimes they didn't commit is just pure evil. Well, chinese characters tend to be self-centered and egoistic, so this counting to them as evil is unlikely.
