    Hey everyone!

I have the joy of translating a novel that has tons of ancient Chinese references, one of which being the time system. After a solid eight months of correlating between different resources each time and still not memorizing the time system, I said to heck with it all! and put together this quick-ref graphic.

This is the two-hour shi chen (時辰) system, not the annual calendar! That's usually denoted by whichever emperor's reigning. This is the ancient Chinese system vs our 24 hr system vs the Chinese zodiac.

Hope this helps anyone who's ever in the same position! I've also got detailed explanations of each hour on my site if you need more clarification. http://etvolare.com/ancient-chinese-time-system/

Nice, thanks for this. Ive come across these usages in Classical Japanese texts but never really wondered what each animal really represented.

I thought you’re going to say how Ancient Chinese uses the lunar calendar. Hence, new year in China falls on the first day of the lunar year, not the solar year.

*facepalm* Good point. It's in the detailed explanation, but some sort of hint would've been helpful too. I'm just too used to deciphering them myself. XD It's the zodiac's order clockwise starting from the top!

Oh hey now, good point. I should clarify that this is the two-hour 時辰 system, not the calendars in which they're all denoted by whichever emperor was reigning.

    一夜为五更,1更为两小时。所以三更半夜,三更就是半夜。
    临晨就是在晨龙之前的时间,已虎或更早
