The main problem is his mentality. The family has ALWAYS been neutral. He sticks to that neutrality. It doesn't matter if it's his own family, he'll toss them to the dogs because it's for "the greater good" or something stupid like that. MC would have been like that too, had her father's past not come back to bite him and time-travel not gotten involved. The feud between his wives? He didn't want to pick a side and stayed "neutral." Keira's death? Cosette played him like a fiddle. Everyone believed in the switch and she was killed because that's what the majority wanted. The father's only real sin here is the fact that he did nothing. He just stood by and let it happen. He want's to maintain his neutrality stance. (At least, this is what I've gotten from the spoilers we've been given)
hmm, for the neutral discussion, I may have some points to give out. I personally think that the author knows what the definition of neutral is but twisted the definition of neutral is and the Duke just sincerely doesn't care about what happened around him and puts up the act of being "neutral" but that's just how I personally see it. So in the first timeline, Keira did everything to be noticed by her father to the point she threw herself downstairs, but now, it's his turn and his daughter doesn't care because she's done with him. How tables have turned
