Cross Game is a really good baseball one. It's a little sad a first, but it sets the foundation for a lot of the interpersonal relationships that really drive the show. Kaleido Stage is an anime about an acrobatic company like Cirque du Solei. It is a bit older, so the animation isn't as crisp. Plus it was written for younger girls and it's a bit silly, but I would say that the friendships and lessons learned in it (along with the shows they throw) are actually really cool and sweet that even adults would enjoy.
