So I bought a spare drum set for $50 to take to gigs and not mess up my nice set. It's pretty mismatched color wise, so I was thinking about painting them. But before I dis, I realized.... I'm not too sure what the plastic covering is for. Is it ok to cut it off or remove it? BTDubbs, I'm asking on here because I have an account for this and not some drummer website.... So yeah

My dad was a drummer in drumcorps.
I'd ask him, but he's asleep right now.
I'm pretty sure painting them will effect the sound though.
Well. That is only my guess. I'm not a drummer. Maybe spray paint would be fine...
I don't know about the plastic coverings. I think it might just be to protect it from scratches or wear.

If you're willing to wait, I'll ask him tomorrow and post his answer here.
Just to make sure, you mean the really thin plastic film on the outside of the drum, not on the top or the bottom, right?

Yeah, the drum wrap. I know it can be replaced, I'm just not too sure about painting or staining

............ shit. I'm sorry. I forgot to ask him.
He started talking about politics before I could say anything, I got sidetracked and forgot to ask about the drums.

Ok, I was able to ask.
When I asked about the paint, I said it was specifically for the outside.
His answer was that paint shouldn't affect the sound. That even if it does, it'd barely be noticable at all, and would make no real difference.
He mentioned that other things would make a much bigger difference in the sound: whether the drum is metal or wood, what kind of material the drum head is made out of, the shape of the drum, something about a scoop(?).
Anyway, from what he said, looks like there's no reason not to paint. (y)
