If you're talking about percentage instead of sheer numbers... then it's (probably) for gay guys instead of girls

My completely straight hubby, who has no interest in BL, has recently decided he’s going to read all my recent fanfiction... almost all of which has some level of BL. :sweating_profusely: He read one of my G rated fics and liked it, but the BL in that one was almost non-existant. I’m just waiting to see what happens when he reads... some of my other stuff. But considering his slow pace of reading, I’m pretty sure the wait’s going to kill me.

Girls don’t seem to be grossed out about it like guys. I’ve seen a lot of straight girls kiss to greet and say goodbye. But I’ve never seen straight guys kiss unless you put a gun to their head.

On the contrary. I know a number of hetero guys who slay BL on the daily. Its all a matter of mindset.

I think everyone has become sidetracked a bit. The question is what makes up the majority of readership for yaoi novels, not if straight guys read it as well. I would assume it would be mainly females being the larger audience base followed by gay/bi guys and then a small minority of straight men.

I actually looked into this a while back. (Just some internet searches, nothing thorough.)

The BL that most people think of are stories written by women for other women. There are many theories about why gay romance is so attractive to fujoshi but none of the reasons I've come across are convincing to me. Either way, gay men are the minority of BL readers and as someone said beforehand in the thread, stories created by gay guys for other gay guys are usually refered to as Bara ("Rose" in contrast to the "Lily" for lesbian romance) and Bara is generally an unpopular genre, if known at all, among fujoshi. (Fujoshi= women who love BL, fudanshi= men who love BL.) That said I've come across only two or three people who openly admitted to be gay men in the BL community so it's not like they don't exist. Like how there are girls who might enjoy Yuri (which is usually guys creating for guys) or harem protagonist stories which are also oriented towards male audiences, there are also guys, regardless of their orientation, who might enjoy BL.

I think that if you stay away from some BL stories you are missing out. There are many stories with BL elements with the main selling points not being the gay romance. It could be Drama, Thriller, Actions or a mixture of things. Most of these stories are at a disadvantage when it comes to gaining popularity, because the genres are being filtered out by new readers so they are at a disadvantage when it comes to gaining readers.

I dont actively look for BL. It just happens that some stories I read are BL.

I read BL stories occasionally, well moslty webcomics like Social Cat, which is labeled bl but more of a bromance than anything, I dont have many BL that fits my taste which is very specific for me to read it. But almost all BL/GL lovers I know are female, and the only time guys see GL is on pornhub when they are horny. But my hatred for BL has decreased over the years

The problem with yaoi for me and many other readers is that we like women. I cant identify with a mc who romances or is romanced by another man. I cannot relate hence I cannot enjoy.

Exactly! I always put myself in the mc’s shoes. But I don’t want to think about being with other men.
