First off, this is just a rant but since I’ve got nothing to do, i decided to create a thread to get this off my chest and at the same time see how many nuffians have suffered a fate similar to mine.. So.. i just moved into my new flat 6 months ago and i was super happy since the landlord seemed like a nice guy, a family man who had morals.. When i first moved in, he told me my neighbor (the guy who’s also a family man that lives under me) is a plumber and that if i were to ever have problems i should ask him. Anyway, 2 months after i move in, the water pump stops working so i went to my neighbor and asked him to fix it since I didn’t have any water at all. He fixed it, literally at the end of the day, but I didn’t mind since i was out most of the time but then he smacks me with a $100 repair fee which i thought was abnormally expensive but being the nice guy i am, I didn’t question him and paid. In the blink of an eye, 4 months pass and there’s no problem, so one morning (a couple of weeks ago) i went to pick my mom up from the airport and when i come back, there’s no water or electricity but I don’t think much of it because of the construction around the area (it had been cutting off irregularly the last few days) but a couple hours later i realize the main fuse was down in the fuse box and I’m flabbergasted since theres barely any load on it at all but then an hour later my neighbors daughter comes knocking on my door saying my hot boiler tank is leaking and its spilling everywhere ruining the roof of the building. Again I’m flabbergasted but still ask her father how much it would cost when he came back home and throws a $400 repair fee in my face saying its leaking due to ‘misuse’.. So, i call up my landlord and patiently explain to him that its not possible -the boiler tank is old and its due to its age that its leaking but he argues that its my fault and that the plumber says so. Anyway, by now I’d be a 3rd rare villain in a Xianxia if I hadn’t realized these motherf***ers were conning me so after i told him that I’m no idiot i brought a different plumber, a 3rd party just to see what the problem is and guess what???? ITS OLD! When the landlord realized he couldn’t fool me and let his friend (my neighbor) benefit, he tried to still get me to pay through one of the clauses in the contract stating anything that breaks is my obligation to repair but when i took a closer look, it stated that if anything were to break due to MY misuse of it, then I’d be obliged to pay.. Anyway, after 10 days of going back and forth the ass finally relented to cover %50 and by then, i just wanted my hot water back so i agreed so long as the 3rd party fixed it and guess what.. it cost $350 for bigger and better quality tank! The old one was of cheap quality and only 100 liters but the new one is 140 and much better quality. Yes, i know I’ve went on and on and i, myself, usually get tired reading such long rants. So, have any of you suffered from an ass hole of a landlord?
At the ripe old age of 40 there a have been plenty of asshat landlords... I just moved to a new appartment soon as I was able.
I thought he replaced the entire pump but after i paid him i found out it was just a single piece and by then I wasn’t guna argue with a man double my age in front of his kids, tbh I wouldn’t put it past him actually causing these problems.. Cause landlords are ass holes that deserve death
I know it might be a little late, but can you get renters insurance? Also there should be a renters advocacy groups that can help mediate or offer advice in case of litigation against said slumlord. Tbh, it's always been my experience that large appliances like that go out, it's the landlord that's responsible not the renter.
Well first off not sure if it's legal or what not but if it's having to get fixed I'd say just pay it, and deduct it from the rent but not 100% sure. Secondly always get a second quote from a person not supplied by someone else (yer landlord). Thirdly make sure to look for a different place before the end of your lease. Fourthly get pictures of how the place looks prior/when you leave. Because he will and mostlikely hold yer security deposit by the sound of him and well if you plan on getting anything back you'd need that. Also get proof/documentation of him tryin to charge you extra / blaming you for his old tank or whatever (might be good to get it written via the company you had check the tank out & make sure there's proof of company letterhead or use them as a reference). And finally make sure to leave a paper trail via text or emails. Well not sure if that will help yah but may wanna look into the first part and see if that's viable.
I’ll definitely look into it when i move into a new place, I’m looking for a place from now so when the contract expires (it was a yearly payment) i’ll have hopefully found a better place with a better landlord
If i could deduct it from the rent i would lol but i paid for a full year through a real estate leasing office and they hold my security deposit as well so I’m not worried about him trying to stiff me, unless of course he somehow colludes with them as well, if that were to happen then I’d definitely be f*cked.. I’m already looking for places from now even though i still got 6 months left, firstly its to take my time looking for a good place and secondly its because its a brand new tank so I wanna use the hell out of it before i leave his apartment. I also told the 3rd party company to be on stand by to get a phone call from leasing office cause this ass still owes me $175 and if I don’t get it from him then I’m definitely getting it from the real estate leasing office
Well honestly as long as your not being harassed and you still like the place, it might be a case of better to deal with the devil you know then the devil you don't. Things like renters insurance and the advocacy group should be easy to access even in an apartment your already living in. Then again the place you live now might not be as desirable as it was a year ago. *shrug* besides, you've already put the extra 250 into the apartment to make it "better", might as well benefit from it rather then the new tenant.
muhaha! Just make sure it's 'normal' wear and tear. Cuz he might try n pull a fast one on yah. Also be ready for a just in case.
Man this is horrible. I hope I never come across this situation. The first mistake you made was actually paying 100$, don’t ever be pushover or give them a leverage. To think they tried to make money out of you by working together. You should quickly move out, well that’s what I’d do
I’d rather move out and let the new tenant benefit off of what i fixed then stay and have more problems pop up.. just 2 days after i fixed the tank, one of the pipes for the sink in the bathroom burst but i just went and bought insulating tape for $1.50 and wrapped it up, I’m not guna fix it. I complained that the fan for his fridge needs to be replaced cause its making noise and will eventually ruin other components and his reply was “this sound is normal, its been there since i bought it” i told him he’s an idiot, quite literally and that although I’m not proficient in electrical engineering or utilities in general, I’m a mechanical engineer at the end of the day and that i know what I’m talking about. He’s thought i was some university grad student that’s living alone for the first time My mama always told me my biggest flaw is my kind heart but yeah, definitely moving out! I wouldn’t wish for my worst enemies to have to shower with super cold water when its 6 or 7 degrees Celsius outside..
When Ai-chan just moved out from home due to an argument with my father, Ai-chan didn't really have anywhere to go. At that time, Ai-chan hasn't met my current girlfriend Waiwai yet. Didn't even have a job, was still in college at that time. Ai-chan managed to get some modelling gigs here and there but quickly realized that Ai-chan was being scammed by the industry. Ai-chan took a break from modelling, instead chose to work at a bookstore that gave miniscule income. There wasn't enough for anything and Ai-chan had to spend half of my income just for lunch. It was at this point that the landlord's daughter, who also stayed in the house raised the rent. Ai-chan couldn't afford it, but Ai-chan had nowhere else to go because eventhough the rent was raised, it was still a little cheaper than most other houses in the area. So Ai-chan begged her to reconsider. In turn for covering for part of the rent with her own allowance, Ai-chan had to personally pay her with my ass.
