This looks good! I will try it. :D

But yeah...I’m at a loss for any series that’s well done where the author is trapped inside their own work.

Novel’s Extra? (I have troubles with it because like a lot of KR authors he starts dropping the original premise in favor of being more “exciting” to his readership.)

... isn't this a ripoff from "W - Two Worlds" (2016)? And why's the background all cherry blossoms and japanese buildings? o_O

I dropped it around chapter 100, I saw it was going nowhere
I saw a bit about that when it came out, I accidentally downloaded an episode when I was downloading WWW Search
This story is more light hearted. I believe the female lead was the author in W-Two Worlds

There was a lot of romance in it, it wasnt just teasing.
The reason I like Unexpected is that since it is a book, the characters are fake.
So you cannot really accuse the cast of acting poorly when they are supposed to be fake
Criticizing a robot for being stiff makes no sense

I forgot to add, unlike other stories like W. The female lead is the villain. So the author doesn't like her.
It isn't like ORV or Novel's Extra where the reader/author is trying to support the good guys.
He needs to support the bad girl to go back to the real world

I actually tried watching the first episode. A little odd ... MC is clearly a shoujo mangaka. I thought most of these stories typically have a female MC (who transmigrated as the evil 2nd FL in a novel)? Tons of those novels out there.
The CG budget looks big though ... all those cheap Chinese/Vietnamese animators =)

    Are manga fine?

Like "As You Wish, Prince" which is a korean manga where one of the characters drags the MC into her own story.

Like you said, the story is unique given that it's a dude in a shoujo manga instead of a girl in a shoujo manga.
The running gag is that he is crap at writing though lol
This is a spoiler but the evil second female lead was him transferring aggression because of a traumatic experience with a girl.
Like I said previously, the characters are fake. The story doesn't try to pretend that they are real which was interesting to watch

Ah ok, that explains why he told the NPC he sucks talking to girls. All the scenes of him trying to act cool are so smarmy ....
    reminds me of Pharma Bro.

Hahhaa I dont recall his name but I watched him a lot in the news, it is very weird. He must have mental issues, all he had to do was apologize and he might have gotten no jail time.
He acts similar to Ted Bundy. To me he didnt really do anything wrong, people like Bill Gates and Apple have been doing the same for years. The only difference is that he did it with medicine.
He either needed a PR guy or he needs a psychiatrist.

He was trying to act cool like the original male lead. And as Logic pointed out, he is crap at writing. Give it until episode 2 and see if you enjoy it.
The story gave me a Truman Show feel. Unlike stories like this:
https://www.viki.com/tv/35710c-i-cannot-hug-you?locale=en ( I love the actress due to Man Comes To Tang Dynasty which is about a dude who time slipped and was teaching people Oppa Gangnam Style lol. But I cannot hug you is just bad)
It was surprisingly emotionally driven and thought-provoking

Reader - Suddenly Became A Princess One Day, although it's your standard female lead shoujo isekai. I think it's better to read the webtoon version of it, the adaptation was an eye candy.

Mmm, will give it a try if I have time. The new Season 2 of Jack Ryan came out, saving up binge watching time for that.

Was checking out "The King's Avatar" drama version last few months as well.
I don't like that the story took a lot of liberties with the novel, but the insane number of eye-candy cast is pretty impressive for a China production.
It's embarrassing, but I will grudgingly acknowledge that as a straight man, I was bent for a few seconds when I saw Yang Yang in a suit :notworthy: This damn show caused me to blow $800 on a new bespoke suit for a friends wedding last month.

King's Avatar felt like money laundering to me.
Look at all the expensive PCs in their so called " average" cafe.
I am not that into suits but I pointed out that Martial Universe was so bad but was also very popular because you can get fans to watch 5 hours of Yang Yang topless and get more viewers than Game of Thrones

    Haha, what did you expect.
Chinese drama quality is still pretty bad (relative to Korea), and the censorship and handicapping of Chinese art direction/themes doesn't help. They gotta rely on eye-candy to sell viewership. With 1BN Chinese, can't be that hard to find good looking people to fill in as actors, even if their acting skills suck.

To this day, I'm still amazed at how CCTV was able to cast actors in the (imagined) likeness of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms (1994)" characters. Pretty sure most RoTK shows/media/games thereafter copied it.

Yeah, now everyone is Han Chinese. They dont use Jurchins or Mongolians or Tibetians anymore.
I recall that an actual ancestor of Genghis Khan was used to play him about 2 decades ago.
    Not anymore though
The female leads are even getting younger even in Unexpected, I believe the villainess was born in 1999
I recall negative fan reaction because the female lead in a drama was born in 1992 and the male lead in 1997..
With all the 12 year old actresses used in French movies with 40 year old men
    There wasnt backlash until recently
    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-50322452
Leon The Professional comes to mind
    [IMG]

People complain why BL stories are adapted as BG or bromance
The bromance is probably going to be more common since women have been conditioned to hate other women
stories filled with just pretty boys are doing so well regardless of plot.
The Untamed will probably break all the records and make My Love From The Star look like crap lol
I wonder what the Chinese government will do moving forward
Regardless of how it is hidden, spotting homoerotic undertones will be seen or manufactured by fans haha

About censorship, look at Japan, wild wild west without censorship does not guarantee quality
I enjoyed this at the time but Shimokita Glory Days is plain rubbish

Even Korean dramas usually just look good with zero substance since they let fans decide plot.
Their movies are just perverted and disturbing when you see all the female nudity and suicides of the actresses after the movies air
Given how French love perverted stories, Korean movies are very well accepted with Palme d'Or wins
Japanese movies have won Oscars though

I think the issue is that you have one person in power: Chinese government or too few people in power (Chinese government officials or Korean and Japanese Conglomerates) it makes it difficult to get good stories when they just cast their clients.
Look at Johnny Associates, now that the founder died, the artists are now allowed to owned Social media accounts..

You're namedropping too many dramas ... I'm not as much of a cinephile like you :notworthy:

What was the CN problem with the age of characters vs actors though? Getting too old ppl to play minors?
That's always been a prevalent problem ... not enough child actors that fit the bill, so an older person goes in and inadvertently over sexualizes the character. How many teenage roles are played by 20-somethings?. Guess it can't really be helped, as long as they mind the role and dress-code. Think the "Reply" series just straight up used late 20s-30s actors to play teenagers as an inside joke.

Jean Reno! I met him almost a decade ago on a plane out of Singapore-Japan. Think it was around the time he was the spokesperson for some luxury watches. He was sleeping, so I badgered 2 different air stewardesses to confirm if it was him so I could get an autograph later. NOBODY knew who the hell Jean Reno was .... so disappointing.

Yea Japan went the other extreme opposite end of censorship. The loosely enforced pedophilia laws are a complete joke. Ends up being a vicious cycle of raising more and more perversion =/

The Korean film industry has come a long way from the sleazy stuff in the 90s and early 2000s. Granted there's still A LOT of room for improvement with the recent 2019 scandals. Sounds bad, but we have to accept that the entire film industry is setup for these situations to happen. It's almost an issue of self-selection. Beautiful people rushing into an industry filled with rich and powerful men is just going to be risky.
I dunno if governments will step in and setup divisions to monitor these things, e.g. ICAC Internet Crimes Against Children, task force in US specifically to handle issues of child pornography. Sounds like way down low on the priority list compared to at-risk individuals who have zero means of self-protection (illegal immigrants, children, etc).
But expecting self-censorship and self-policing in the film industry is also kinda naive ...

As for Korean film/drama quality, while there are definitely a lot of bad ones, I think the # good ones are still much higher than other asian film industries. So I shy away from labeling them all as "usually just look good with zero substance" =)
Just like there are going to be a lot more good Japanese animated movies compared to Disney/Pixar.

EDIT: Found an article on China you'll probably appreciate.
    https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsa...oo-pop-up-sexual-consent-workshops-might-help

Until recently, the Chinese public had been slow to embrace #MeToo, in part because the government views the movement as a way for hostile foreign influences to infiltrate China. In an op-ed on the website of the Communist Party-run People's Daily, Vice President of the All-China Women's Federation Song Xiuyan wrote that Western countries seek to meddle in Chinese domestic affairs by hawking feminism and equal-rights protection, with an ultimate goal of subverting the Party's rule.

Still, despite the government's effort to suppress #MeToo, the movement is gaining traction. To show support yet evade internet censors, social media users circulate slogans like #Mitu, a homophone that translates into "rice bunny" in Chinese.

Well, I am not of a cinephile but more of a wikipedia addict, well a recovering one lol
I am not saying Korean movies are bad, they are lots of good ones eg My Sassy, The Lakehouse and many other popular US movies which turned out to be remakes of very good Korean movies.
I am talking about Korean TV since the plot is determined by online polls, it is pretty ridiculous
The Chinese government wont win, especially when better alternatives to VPN keep getting built
    Their wall will be bypassed.
My point with Korean movies is that they are very similar to French movies: perverted Directors
My issue with Korean movies is in how this joke was actually disturbing but they didnt see it that way and actually made it into a movie

The quality of Korean movies is not much different from French movies. There are internationally acclaimed.
    I still find them disturbing

I have watched Filipino, Thai and Indian media and I have to agree Japanese and Korean movies are miles ahead

About Chinese casting , I recall that 60 year old actress playing a 16 year old, it was not something to celebrate like the news reports seem to portray.
The same way I am not a fan of so called multi talented artists who can allegedly sing, act , etc
They are just taking jobs away from others and the production companies are simply cheap
I was to how Chinese media companies are learning that flower boys are more popular instead of casting 40 year old dudes as 18 year olds.
That is why you are getting an actor born in 1997 being paired with an actress born in 1992
I found it ironic when they mocked the actress as too old when we consistently have male stars 10 years or more older than their female co stars

The prescient grandfather of Singapore LKY said the same thing about the Chinese firewall over a decade ago.
And he was still wrong o_O

I don't think it matters whether there are methods to bypass the firewall. Because the populace will just accept state censorship and self-censorship as the norm.
They won't even bother trying to find information outside of the network, as long as they are not being totally oppressed in a way that limits their livelihood. Which is why pundits say the real secret to continued Chinese rule is a strong economy.
A majority of Rep and Dems can't even be bothered to look for news beyond Fox and NYT.

There's a saying (I think) from Singapore, "Eventually you don't need police. Because the police is in your head".
