I'm including games with ATB gauges

Growlanser 4: Wayfarer of Time for the PSP is great, requires a bit of work to get it running on a emulator though.
Parasite Eve 1 & 2 for the PlayStation are pretty good. The sequel, The 3rd Birthday is ok.
Both the original Paper Mario as well as The Thousand Year Door. Thousand Year Door can get kind of tedious with all the backtracking though.
SMT Devil Survivor 1 & 2. I recommend buying the remasters on 3DS if you have one, they have a lot more content and voiced lines. The original DS ones are still great though.
Pretty much any Fire Emblem, Path Of Radiance and Radiant Dawn might be to hard to get running to a playable speed on a laptop though.
Valkyrie Profile 1, the second is great to, but it would be difficult to get it to a playable speed on a laptop.
    Valkyria Chronicles 1 & 2 are great.

edit:Just remember another, Sword In The Stars: The Pit. Turn based rogue-lite, really good.

whoa, OP said things to play on a laptop...

3DS Emulation is a bit far off, so i dont recommend any of em unless you wanna pay topdollar for it + the games.

Well anyways, Chrono Trigger (DS or SNES), Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX), Radiant Historia (DS), Pokemon Platinum (DS), Pokemon HeartGold (DS), Pokemon Black2/White2 (DS)

I honestly actively looked for ARPGs though.

3rd Birthday is a third person shooter. And if we're mentioning Parasite Eve then Vagrant Story must be mentioned, since it plays the same as the first Parasite Eve game.

The third got a fan translation as well.

if you don't mind getting into emulation or if you have a PS1 or GBA then try Riviera the promised land, Sigma star saga (half rpg half sidescrolling shooter), Summon Night: Swordcraft Story, Breath of fire series, Lunar Legends, Golden sun.

Whoops, forgot about The 3rd Birthday being different to the others. Never played Vagrant Story so I dunno how it is. I didn't know about that, I'll have to give it a try, thanks.

The Quest by Redshift is a extremely fun and engaging rpg (has terrible graphics, but it's not a game played for the graphics). I played it quite a bit when I was young and picked it back up again recently and it's quality.

Starcrawlers is a light-weight, grid-based, first-person exploration, with its combat done turn-based style. It's on GoG and Steam, look it up.

I wish I knew more any people who had played The Quest or even Undercroft. They were fun games.

Damn so many great games mentioned in this thread. I'm going to have to pretend to try hard to name turn based games that haven't been mentioned yet. Man, I might actually even have to think for a second.

Okay, got one. I submit Lost Odyssey.

If we're cool with games that are active turn based, like the later FF games, I'd like to mention Grandia, and Ni No Kuni.

In fact, I'd like to vote for Ni No Kuni to be moved to the top of the list.

    Endless Space
    Endless Legend

both good games. Though Legend demands more power from your PC (because it looks amazing). While Space is really good strategy wise.

Isn't Lost Odyssey an Xbox exclusive title? I mean it always seemed like a great game, but I never played it for that exact reason. And since he's looking for games that he can play on his labtop, I thought xbox emulation was pretty much nil.

Sorry. I kind of read the thread title and ignored the actual post. I usually don't actually do that, but I got excited with all the games listed here.. and noticed that many of them were console games. So I sort of thought the thread was more general than that.

Darn. I'm going to have to actually think hard to name something that hasn't been named yet, then.

    Or not.

    Phantom Brave

Yes, I know it's not quite on steam yet, but it can be emulated.
