Discussion Chinese Danmei History

So I came across a thesis about Chinese danmei. It is free to view, and hosted by University of British Columbia. It is pretty long, even if one removes the double spacing. However, it is very informative.

What I found interesting is the author clearly identifies 纯爱 to be strictly BL, while 言情 is BG romance.

Even if the content of her argument is glossed over, she also provides more accurate translations and explanations of some internet terminology.

interesting. i guess she was able to defend her thesis properly if it's published on the UBC hosted site. never in a million years would have thought of using Danmei as a valid line of study for a masters degree.

 

That's one dedicated fujoshi. Respect.

 

From the paper it seems the study of danmei has supporters in Taiwan, and is included in the studies of other non-fujoshi academics.

But idk.. After reading her glossary...i feel like a lot of her definitions are so generalized towards a specific type of danmei ...=_=

Editing: i only made it through half her paper until she starts reviewing and analyzing that novel.

Based on her description....Dogblooded novel with crazy plots just for drama =_=

So much of that paper is explanation of terms and footnotes lol.

 

Yeah I think she was arguing the quality of danmei has gone down. Stories no longer focused purely on forbidden danmei love, but were general stories but the romance was between two guys.

I found it interesting that she believes danmei authors felt superior that they were accepting of LGBTQ stuff.

 

I think this is a legitimate thesis. I have participated in research for a thesis on anime/manga and one for Japanese yaoi. Then have read a very interesting thesis on vampires. The vampire one used vampires the show case how the influence of religion has changed. Before vampires were really weak to religious symbols now a days most vampires have little to do with religion. Thesis can be about ANYTHING. I have heard of someone doing one on zombies but either they haven't published it yet or they never finished it.

 

That is pretty cool you participated in theses about anime/manga, and even Japanese yaoi. Do you happen to have a link to the yaoi one?

 

Sorry no. I wish I did it I tend not to read any thesis that I was interviewed or did she survey for. You could try google I think multiple papers have been written about this subject or similar ones.

Right!? I laughed aloud so hard because I imagined a semi truck! Thinking, "Well, I guess that works because Tops usually are overbearing and heavyhanded..."

I did my thesis on religious representation in video games. Academics are a lot of fun, and all cultures deserve to be studied. It’s a lot of fun and any subculture or art form is worth being studied imo.

 

I never thought someone would make a thesis about danmei
