Is there a website that has literal translations for idioms along with their meaning and English equivalents? What I mean is "white lotus" is basically a pure selfless type girl... probably, I think. So I'd want the literal translation (white lotus) with the definition (pure girl) and maybe the English equivalent (she's so pure you can see her hallo). I can live without the English equivalent, it'd just be nice.

I just wanna have a reference for all the weird idioms I read in Chinese novels that are sometimes explained (but not always). I've tried just Googling idioms as I come across them but this turns out to be surprisingly difficult (trying to find the definition for the idiom "eating dog food" just brings up warning article about dog food made in China, for instance).

a lot of things will be on dictionaries

other stuff you'll have to find on baike baidu and quora equivalents (so the explanation is generally in chinese), if you're lucky there will be a list of synonyms that the dictionaries recognize.

worst case is when it's only really part of a particular circle/group/community so you can't really find any explanation

If you have the raw, you can try to copy paste it directly on the goggle, usually it will lead you to several option which one of them at least could explain the idiom to you.

See? I don't even know the correct terms, this is why I ask these questions.:sweating_profusely: Because I'm a big know-nothing. :blobjoy:

Though I did specifically say I tried Googling and would get unrelated results. If I could do a search and get the right results, I wouldn't be here asking.

    Thanks for all the replies!

Needing a dictionary to understand a translation defeats the purpose
