    Did you write all that out now or was it pre-written.

    It took like an hour or so to work out, but I've thought about/worked out this problem before (so I guess you could say it was pre-written except for the fact I needed to remember it). ;-;

    Ah okay. I liked it. I've not done math like that for a while, was interesting. The space/time thing was very knowledgeable as well. You get all that from somewhere or are you just clever?

    I took a physics class relatively recently so lorentz contraction/dilation is still relatively fresh on my mind. As for the calculus I used wolfram alpha~ XDDD

    You remember things a lot better than I ever did. Wish I was like that in the past

    I'm like 99% certain that that is inaccurate. in the formula [V = D / T ], T is the static stationary observer, In the formula Z=T*(1-V^2/C^2)^0.5, the value that matches the stationary observe is the "T" from the right side, not the Z. (i'm using Z to stand in for T(1))

    if you solve for it (and i'm using a program for it because i'm lazy) you'd get

    T=Z/sqrt(-v^2/C^2+1) (with a few caveats).

    And empirically it makes sense otherwise.

    If i am moving at the speed of light i experience no time While the outside observer sees me travel to alpha centauri in 4.4 years.

    Total time 4.4 years

    If i travel at 71% the speed of light From earths perspective i take 6.16 years to reach the star, and i experience 4.33 years. Here is a little chart with the math, double checked a couple of times against the raw formulas and several similar online charts.

    Huh? Are you sure the T in [V = D / T ] is from the stationary observer? Do you think you could link the places where you got this from (or the charts you're looking at? I'm just curious)?

    It doesn't entirely make sense to me that travel time for the ship approaches zero. The implication for this is that if the ship travels at 0.99999999c, the person on the ship could travel like a thousand light years almost instantaneously (from the ship's perspective). I've never heard of this before, though. This is effectively traveling faster than the speed of light.

    Ahh, following up on this, it seems like your general idea is right (that the travel time for the ship approaches zero). However, it seems like most things I'm looking at are using lorentz contradiction to deal with the distance, which neither of us did.

    ... that's some of the most basic of basic relativity

    Time Dilation, Is about as basic as it gets, The faster you move, the slower time goes for you while the "outside" observer's time remains the same.

    Objectively you can never travel 4 light years faster than light it will always take 4 years minimum to reach that location.

    Subjectively the faster you go, the less time you experience as the traveler. If you want to get heavy into the math check out the Project Rho, Slower than light page, and do a quick search for relativity.

    But the main issue is the algebra error of substituting a non related function in to itself.

    V = D / T

    V= Velocity
    D = Distance
    T = Objective Time

    Special Relativity gives us this formula

    t' = t/sqrt(1-v^2/c^2)

    To calculate the subjective time experienced at any given velocity, http://www.rareuniverse.org/general_science/special_relativity.html

    what happened is you used this formula instead, swapping the objective and subjective time frames.

    t = t'/sqrt(1-v^2/c^2)

    Lorentz contraction doesn't affect distance
    It affects length.

    The ship appears to be smaller in proportion to its speed, while the distance between two points remains unaltered.

    So special relativity alters three things based on speed

    Length, Mass, Time.

    As the ship approaches the speed of light its length decrease its mass increases and its time slows down (from an outside observer's) perspective

    Oddly enough the important fact is that as the mass increases, the ship requires more an more energy for the same speed gains, eventually reaching the requirement of infinite energy to reach lightspeed (which would give the ship infinite mass and zero time.)

    (attempting to read reddit articles) (but failing, lol)

    I was curious about the property that the journey for the ship could be faster than the journey would apparently take for light. The simple descriptive answer was that apparently the distance (from the perspective of the ship) contracts.

    In other words, we have [v = d / t ] from the perspective of earth, and we also have another [v' = d' / t' ] from the perspective of the ship (suppose I was on the ship and already traveled halfway. How long would I have left to travel?). For the second ship equation, d' contracts because v' cannot exceed c.

    EDIT: Actually, looking at my original work again, I didn't swap the t and t' in my equation. >_< The only reasons why our conclusions differed was because we disagreed on whether the t in [ v = d / t ] is T or T'. You are right though, in that it should be [ v = d / t' ], though I suspect it would also be possible to compute it by modulating d from lorentz contraction.

    Actually you are wrong, the ice fruit, not only lets you manipulate water, it also lets you freeze it, thus giving you the ability to walk over it. Bad news, no intangibility.
