I've seen in many cn's that have these inns where the mc will stay that are built with courtyards. It sounds cool and all, but I don't understand how that works. What does it look like? How can an inn have a courtyard? Are there real inns that have these or is it just a fantasy setting? Can anyone describe it so I can better visualize it?

It took one search of "chinese courtyard". Basically an indoor garden as often shows up in chinese tv shows covering that period of time.

I imagine that it's like those Japanese rectangular houses with the open square in the middle that contains the courtyard. Like so:

They are refering to a particular architecture style, known as siheyuan

if you've seen the movie Kung Fu Panda, the noodle store, that is an example of a very small courtyard.

For the building above, the area on the lower right is the "public area" where most guests would be received. the middle section (after the second gate) would be the family quarters, while the third gate guards the area for the family head and elders, and usually the temple or shrine if the family could afford one.

So that a real thing? The courtyard is in the middle? I was picturing it as more of a front yard thing

Ironically until america got involved, the "front yard" thing didn't exist, if you had land you wrapped a wall around it and had a small inner garden (like in britian or china), and had the house abut the street with the yard protected in the back.

However american architects started to use the yard as a status symbol and way to isolate people from each other (i'd have to dig it up but there were actual math and social studies done that established i think 11 yards as the optimal separation to "prevent people from interfering with each other, but still allowing occasional social interaction")

Indeed, simple...plants,sunshine, breathing in the air, secluded and cozy.
and if its xianxia, I reckon it would be slightly bigger so they have room for excercise if neccessary (but there are maybe 1-3 of those)
