Discussion cooking breaks in novels

well i was reading a Japanese novel and then i after a good start a really well story build up it started explaining " how to cook japnese food" and if that was not enough it even started explaining how good it is taking 2 to 3 chaps .
and then you realise that it is happening to a lot of Japanese novel these days i dont know if they lack content or something but they seems filling gaps in novels using cooking content and dragging to an annoying level i dropped a few good novels because of this and they for the record were not of cooking genre and i am neither intresed in it. what are your veiws on it....

I have dropped many of these myself if I find that I have to skip something every other chapter.

ahh, glorious japanese cuisine

 

filler content that the writer wishes they may eat.... cuz i believe all writers dont take the time to have regular meals while they are engrossed in writing their novels.....

things they may with someone else may cook for them? stuff they have eaten and wish to eat again.... their own food addiction?

 

On a more serious note, perhaps the target people who read wn (Japanese) actually see it as something interesting or entertaining. I wouldn't be surprised if the author puts those scenes in there becuase the jap. readers actually like learning cuisine of thier culture.

welp, if it's only for a few chapters I won't mind, but if it continues for long I'll eventually skip and maybe eventually drop it...

 

yup same thing happens and i have dropped many its fine if the cooking or food have something to do with the plot but even then just stop explaining to the cellular level i am not gonna start cooking after some reincarnation harem novel.

 

The only novel where it did not annoy me was about that northern noble and his raptor wife...
But, deer lord, those are so annoying. Like, they get to eat a f-- dragon steaks and other crazy stuff, and all they do is goddamn complaining about a lack of rice and stuff. I'd be more than happy to shut up and just drop that dragon meat to the pot for some roaring strogonoff instead of whining why the potatoes are called just potatoes(I grew up in the place where different breeds of potatoes were used for soups, puree or just boiling/grilling, and it was a common household knowledge wich use to what).

 

Eh? Does it really matter that much?

Usually it has comedy involved on the cooking chapters AFAIK, I have a good time reading those... It's pretty nice overall.

 

90% of the reasons why I'm dropping most JP or just skimming through pages.

nahhh... if theres too much cooking stuff going on in a novel then the official genre of novel would add cooking. . . . XD

 

I actually agree with this, but maybe we use it as a tag since if it's genre, then people will expect the mc to be a chef

 

I actually like the cooking part of the novels. Yeah, they get repetitive, but so does the other 101 tropes that exist in other novels. At least it's educational, you know?

If they get too repetitive, I tend to just ignore and skim through them. But most of the time, they teach you something new. Like I didn't know Miso and Soy Sauce were practically the same fermented stuff except one's the top layer and the other is the bottom layer. Doesn't seem to help us out irl but interesting to know, no?
