So, with Cyberpunk 2077 getting more content, my family was really interested. Then my brother downloaded the old ttrpg game rule book. I printed it out and now i am making a secretive journalist who will stop at nothing to find the cause of his parents' death. I really love the character creation aspect of this game in particular, but... there are one too many dated items such as cassette players and clunky cellphones that need a holster to carry them. is there a more modern version? can there be TechnoRockers? i feel a more modern version would be quite amazing. any thoughts?
Mike Pondsmith is working on Cyberpunk Red. It's probably going to come out after Cyberpunk 2077 to join the timelines after the 4th Corporate War and 2077.
Cyberpunk 2.0.2.0 wasn't a *Board* Game, it was/is a Tabletop (aka Pen-and-Paper) RolePlaying Game (think "Dungeons & Dragons" for the philistines out there). CP 2.0.2.0 was the 2nd Edition, CyberGeneration (a spinoff about teens in the setting after a nanobot plague got loose in the mid-20s [IIRC] got 2 versions in before CPv3 in 2005 (from what I can tell). That being said, I *think* (but can't be bothered checking) that CPv3 might've tried to finally implement Fuzion as the core mechanical system (which was always an abortion, but after all the Barbie photos in CPv3 I wasn't really paying attention to the mechanics, also, I would've preferred for The Fourth Corporate war to have had more of an influence on the world even if the campaign was never fully written & published), while CP 2.0.2.0 still used Interlock, which had authorized fan updates & extensions hosted at Datafortress 2020 (which you can probably find on the Wayback Machine if it isn't still around).
Storywise I believe that it is not a good idea to update a modern version to CP 2020. If you prefer a modern version it would be better to have a new expansion set closer to CP 2077 or simply wait for CP 2077 to be released. Cyberpunk at the end of the day is thematically a highly advanced dystopian steampunk society, hence "cyberpunk." Meaning older tech melding with modern and sci-fi tech is part of its charm. But this is just a fan's opinion. Maybe someone will come up with a better version of it. Who knows? It is the charm of science fiction!
I never was able to get ahold of Cyberpunk 2020, although I am a rather big fan of Shadowrun. Although I prefer Shadowrun 2070+ instead of the oldest settings. Lol.
When CyberPunk 2077 was first announced Mike Pondsmith was explicitly mentioned as part of the CD Projekt Red team, so one assumes he has some creative input. Cyberpunk 2.0.2.0 should be available as PDF via the various OneBookShelf storefronts such as DriveThruRPG, though you might want to google a checklist to make sure you aren't getting Cyberpunk 2017 (1st edition), CyberPunk v.3 (3rd edition), CyberGeneration (spinoff), or "Alternate Reality" products (though these would be... umm... Atlas Games? I think). There was also a Cyberpunk RoleMaster-variant game, that I can't remember the name of, so you'd also want to be careful to exclude "Iron Crown Enterprises" products from your shopping list.
To be honest, I have no problem with the dated tech. However, I just know that with the advanced tech we currently have, wouldn't the abilities and skills be amazing?
I have half a mind to save the character creation portion as image files and upload them here just to see what everyone gets.
The issue is CP2020 dates from when classes were thing, so you're a Hacker or a Cop or a Journalist or a Mercenary or a Musician or a Technician/Engineer, & can't (IIRC) really combine roles on one character. Also, I don't think the "Drone Operator" archetype became part of the RTG Cyberunk universe until the "Desnai" faction in BarbiePunk...
Oooo...I am interested. I wanted to be a rough and tumble journalist who would cross enemy lines, using stealth and drones to secretly record the Corp. or boostergang involvement. It was a shame that I had to take several other seemingly unrelated fields.
Was that an option in CPv3? 'cos I'm pretty sure it wasn't in 2020. Using SR mechanics without magic could probably do it though, & IIRC there were fan-efforts to translate the various equipment-porn books from 2020 to both SR2 & SR3 (I hate SR4 nearly as much as CPv3 so I don't know what was done for that).
