Not quite, in the first chapters he couldn't defeat the demon lord cause a title of hero is needed but he equiped the godslayer title then he defeated it. Also anyone could yield holy sword as the third prince shown but it is way lower power.
Depending on the strength of the Holy sword, they reject nonheroes, Satou was burned by the first one he tried to use on that demon. The damage was just negligible at his level.
as CountryMage said it depends on the sword, that of the third prince has a registered user function while his was hero only and it was not a demon lord but a high demon, he just had a hard time because he didn't use a decent weapon and the godslayer title was used to equip the divine sword

It would be at the start of volume 9, probably in chapters 14-18. I'm not sure which part you consider "going to the elf forest" but you can tell pretty easily what happens by the chapter title.
