actually, in the older days, dwarf wasn't portrayed as short/midget people but as buff and gruff people/tribe. only after the lord of the ring got popular did people generally take dwarves as short people.. just to share with you...

Yeah, the Dwarfs in Germanic myth weren't really shorties (not always, anyways). In fact, I don't think their height was ever given, and there were some that seemed to equate the Dwarfs as being "Black Elves". It's not until later that some myths portrayed them as small, and Tolkien took that into Lord of the Rings and such...

 

Yeah, tolkien also changed the face of elves in a similar way the "tall beautiful noble" elf is from tolkien. Before that they were smaller and more mischievious. For example think of the christmas elves as more elves before tolkien. (although thats also a bit off)

 

Actually that isn't entirely true, there was both kinds of elves before Tolkien.

 

Tolkien popularised it though.

 

In terms of bringing it to mainstream media yeah, but he mostly based them around characteristics that already existed in legends and fiction before him, and the "smaller and mischievous" kind hasn't really gone away but rather just become more associated with other names such as for example faeries.
Similarly dwarfs had plenty of depictions as being short before Tolkien, Snow White is a prime example of that.

 

Both "Elves" and "Dwarves" had varying depictions, but it wasn't until Tolkien that most peoples ideas of what makes one or the other sort of "solidified" into a more stable image. By the same token, "Fairy" was much more varied, until Tinker Bell basically made the term synonymous with the tiny little winged magic thing. (Or was it an earlier work that made that connection?)

Another fun fact: The word "Demon" means god. In fact, it use to refer to the old pagan gods, and former pagans that converted to Christianity believed that "Demons" were just like lesser gods or angels, that protected the world before God could get to them. It wasn't until the Church went full anti-paganism that the term "Demon" became a word to call evil creatures.

I believe that she was implying that the animals were grilled and eaten since they went "missing."

 

She didn't imply they were eaten, just cooked. Since there is no trace of blood maybe even alive.

If they were eaten that would be one thing, but notes made it imply like it was for amusement or something along those lines.
