Quite literally banned if i recall correctly, censored by the government and forced to rewrite. Not sure if he wrapped up the story but pretty sure i read that he was burnt out from it and spends more time on another story for the time being.
Not even sure what exactly was the issue or how it would change if he rewrote it.

Reverend Insanity was flagged by some bs CCP morality enforcer and forced to go on hiatus. Author has since moved on to other stories and so the story is incomplete right when the MC is at the peak of the plotline. It is considered both completed and hiatus. Really disappointing, as the story features both one of my favorite cultivation systems and favorite MC.

Probably there will be an end written..

Still just the incomplete novel beats n number of other CN novels who are paraded as tops.

    Absolutely...

Just cause there's no end, it doesn't make the content that it's infamous for, undone right?..

Just read it, even an unfinished RI is thousand of times better than any other xianxia/xuanhuan.

Absolutely, you should definitely read it.

I would split the novel into 4+ major completed arcs.

4th arc ends in the mid 1900s, and then there's like 500 chapters more up til the point where the novel was paused due to being banned.

Also, for when/if you end up reading the novel, there's volumes (e.g. book 1 ends at chapter 200), and each volume or "minor arc" builds up to a finale (end of the volume) so I would recommend to always at least read until the end of the current volume unless you really want to drop the novel for some reason.

Well... volume 3 might be a bit of a drag if I'm being honest.

And something of note: The novel doesn't really start until MC reach rank 6 (Gu Immortal), before that is mostly just laying the ground work (not that earlier chapters are bad or anything).

A major integral part about the novel's setting and it's cultivation system revolves around how the Gu Immortal ranks (Rank 6, 7, 8, and 9) work.
Well there's some disturbing scenes and MC is most definitely the anti-government type of guy (unless he's the government) so yeah...

e.g. feeding a girl to a bear (for cultivating a gu), burning children alive (to use their connection with each other to improve gu refinement), eating monkey brains while the monkeys are alive...

There's also a lot of gore while the MC fights in general as well. Tbh I think the Author went out of his way to make gory descriptions for shock effect, but it's mostly just in the first 800 or so chapters.

Yeah, from the start the MC is entirely anti-socialist and portrays it as a 'we're just fodder' which is basically reality if you're not part of the top of the pyramid.

This whole novel is author lashing out at the hypocrisy of society, the typical tropes that we use in fiction to close our eyes to human nature and the potential meaningless of life (although he does explore it and doesn't just make it all bad.)

Beauty!? we're all just flesh and bones, and end up as feces after beasts feast upon us!~ What good are friends when i can have benefits! i don't believe in the greater good, i am the greater evil!~ Actually, this novel would've gotten into trouble even outside of China, just not completely buried.

It got banned by something really late into the story, though I don't remember which chapter, and the author doesn't really want to compromise his storyline so he dropped it and moved on to another story. Though he said he will come back to finish it if it got unbanned someday (after finishing his new story, ofc).

You should read the story because there haven't been any of this good xianxia/xuanhuan story. Every element in this story is unique, you won't regret reading this masterpiece. The author is writing his new book you should also check that out, though, they both have a completely different styles. I think the author mentioned somewhere that he will finish RI in near future.

    Right the MC even
literally took down the existing government (Heavenly Court)
and that's like a complete no go from what I've heard.

For example there were going to be a Revolution arc in Transcendental Mechanic (aka The Legendary Mechanic), some guys calling themselves The Silver Revolution that was going to overthrown the leading star civilizations's rule over the rest.

Well the author just ended up writing it so their revolution got ended before it even really started to avoid his novel being taken down because it's such a touchy subject, and this was a while after a lot of novels already got taken down (like Daoist Gu).

As for Daoist Gu's continuation, the author said he would finish it no matter what, if Daoist Gu was still banned he'd at least make some summaries for the remaining chapters on his Weibo.

I don't get how people find that offensive frog funny.

If you are not sure about the novel then read the comics/manhua first.
    It will help you decide.

    I hated volume one.
Volume two is one of my favorites

How about the manhua? Do you think that it's just on a hiatus and will be picked up again, or will it be dropped too?

If it's put on hiatus because of the censors then it's dead. There's no real way to sanitize the story so that it would be allowed and even the title is asking for trouble.

Oh I see, thanks so much! I forgot that the manhua creators are also from China, so they would also be under censorship laws.

Calling the novel Reverend Insanity was just the translator taking liberties with the title, to make it more eye-catching and maybe also suggest a bit what the novel is about.

But the actual name of the novel is just Daoist Gu or Gu Daoist Master , well it's literally "Gu True Person".

It's something like Gu + being enlightened.
