I think you should reread the chapter before that .
When he was talking with bow elder and kept moving his legs and drinking 3 cubs of tea to make the one hiding behind them think that he is lying .
Then he went to Jin Ling'er and told her to act as a weak girl and start telling them that he was the culprit.

I have to praise myself for noticing something like that while reading the MTL , while you peep are reading the official translation and didn't even notice that .....
Also , our MC has a narrow mind and will take revenge for the slightest thing .

MC did, however underestimate the resource of Zhu clan, let a big gaping with evening stroll & shopkeeper being a Zhu clan spy. It show our MC might cunning BUT he still a teen not an old demon thus his plan have flaws.

 

No that shows that he has little common sense as if they do check up any of the normal hidden dragon people would say the same thing

 

Now that you mention... thats a huge gaping hole in MC plan. Man, our MC still got ways to truly be a schemer.

Hopefully author will not give up developing our MC cunning gradually, we are in a good read if that the case
