Doesn't matter if its Chinese or Japanese?
Honestly I am a bit tired of it. Mostly every novel I cross upon has a guy who gets all the girls and obtains several wives lol... Sometimes it makes me think that the Author just doesn't know how to write romance. I don't know. What do you guys think?

Harems are fine if done well. Harems can be pointless, if it is never serious and only because all the girls like the same guy. Harems where the girls and the man love each other is a different thing, but it can sometimes and is most times poorly written by the author, as it is a difficult thing to write. A harem in novels require a certain amount of character depth to be able to function, it also has to be serious enough to work with for example real life problems, does our affections and interest match or is this just bullsh*t.

Chinese and Japanese view of polygamy might have been the same in the past, but today i feel that the chinese might be more interested in it. That is not the say that it happens a lot, but the attitude the people carry, i think it's more likely for a chinese family to have more wifes than normal.

i hate harems when all the female characters lose their personalities and just follow the mc like a background puppet. so far only the near ending of mushoku tensei is like that and martial god asura is getting real close. sevens is a good harem since they keep hinting that the relationship is not stable and he can have a mutiny at any moment

Generally I dislike harems as it takes away from character development
However, novels like mushoku tensei pulled it off well

As a girl, I HATE HAREMS with girls in them. Reverse harem with no hentai is fun for me though! Males against each other for a girl is much better than many girls for a boy. There is too much jealousy in girls, boys usually have more honor, and are much less likely to be a bitch. Hurray for otome! Need more of that. Not enough fast updates.

I have no problem with harems, as long as it is written well.

if the setting is done right. I mean if you have it set in modern times where its illegal in a lot of places then your writing a wish fulfillment story. But lets say its kind of medieval and hell you aloud to the fact women die in childbirth then sure you have a believable back reason for allowing polygamy. That's half the sell. the next is how well they write the "romance". If its a MC that "just catch'm all" then no not a big fan of those harems but if the women have well character then yea sure.

Eh, that could be kinda argued. I felt the main storyline put the backburner on the personalities of his wives. Only in Redundancy were they resurfaced.

If it's done right it's ok.
    I like reverse harems tho.
If it's a Chinese political one where one has many concubines it's also fine.
But I usually hate harems if it's not in the above

I don't like the polygamists per se just the entertainment caused by the heroines fighting over the hero.....

I wish authors stuck to building up an interesting relationship with one girl rather than a bland one with many.

Harems are fine in some, sh*t in others I like the way it's done in tales of demons and gods, but if youve read my disciple died yet again and seen the way that one guy acted how he pretty much just forgot all the girls and kept going on his merry way, that's how some are good yet it all depends on how the author decides to write his novel

If there is one thing that needs to be realistic and 'relate-able' in novels then it has to be romance. 99% of the time the romance in novels just doesn't feel real. Edit: polygamy in particular though.

The author always screws up character development when a harem is introduced. 9 times out of 10.

I like Arifureta on that account, he loves that little vampire something and is only with her. He even tells the other women that he doesn't really see them as love interest, but as friends. Even if the novel isn't the best, it's still pleasant to see, that the Mc isn't chasing other girls.

I'm okay with several potential love interests, but in the end, they better pick one. Having several actual partners at once causes me to drop the novel immediately.
