LCD Ending Maker (completely translated) Manhwa is out! ^_^

Was looking at the novel since I saw it pop up recently and just realized it is written by Chwiryong who has written some of my favorite Korean novels (Valhalla Saga, Dungeon Maker, Breakers). This is totally going on my reading list just for that.

 

They kinda end alright to be honest. Both endings are not terrible but not great. Also Dungeon Maker is being translated on Webnovel if you are interested.

I case you haven’t figured it out, it looks like the triggered event is a nighttime bathing FANSERVICE event.

 

When one thinks of a beauty bathing in the river under the moonlight one would imagine an enchanting song, a haunting, seductive melody...
but replacing the original song with a nursery rhyme......twinkle, little star... gasp... I can't...

 

And remarks about how frikking cold the river is...brrr...

A pretty face and potty mouth make for a very interesting combination, NGL. Her foul (but sensible) mouth livens up her character as well as the story itself.

 

Yeah, I like babes with potty mouths too.

 

They need an editor. Here’s the most important secret for translating KR novels. You need a fresh pair of eyes to read the translation. Because of how Korean is translated, by mtl or human, the logic of narrative is usually messed up.


And it was the same for Cordelia, who kept her eyes open to focus the light on the Bicorn.

But only one person.

Jude didn’t close his eyes when Cordelia shouted.

Jude did close his eyes. Hence he wasn’t blinded. The editor has to extrapolate the intent of the author, which for Korean, somehow says it incorrectly, and make the appropriate correction.

Half the time I’m editing Korean novels, I’m reading ahead to figure out the plot, and making corrections on the author’s own words.

 

Hey, translator/editor here. I clearly remembered that part about closing eyes. Frankly, even I was confused if Jude really closed his eyes or not. One sentence said he didn't, but the next said he did. My common sense was telling me too that if the light lit up the entire place, shouldn't Jude and Cordelia be blinded too? But that was how it was written, even though I ran the text on 2 other translators or manually translated each word. In the end, I just gave up and translated as is. (Edit: I thought you were talking about my translation and just checked it. I was wrong...you were actually talking about the mtl, hahaha. Well, I ditched that closing his eyes sentence eventually because it didn't make any sense to me.)

As for the sentence structure, that's just me being lazy, hahaha. I do change a lot of the author's own sentences so that it'll make sense in English. But I guess there are a lot that I missed. Ever since I've started translating this series, I've been posting the new chapter minutes after I've finished translating and doing a quick edit and grammar check. I should probably publish it after I've got a good night's sleep so that I could edit it with a fresh mind the next day, but you could say that I feel pressured to post one chapter a day. I feel like I'll never catch up to the raws if I don't. Yeah, I should change my work ethic and take breaks too, haha.

As for the immersion aspect, I can't help it. I do think I've improved in translating recently, and I've reduced adding translator's notes to the recent chapters. But words like that n-ppang(?) doesn't have an English term equivalent (or there is but I just don't know), so it's hard not to put a note below the sentence it was used. I've considered using footnotes, but it feels weird to me to only understand the term after you've read the chapter.

At this moment, I'm not considering getting an editor to help me out. I feel even more pressured to release a chapter per day if I had one. Perhaps the best solution is to space out chapter releases so that I can have more time editing and catching mistakes. Or figure out a way to stop feeling guilty of not releasing a chapter per day. Well, there's room for improvement, so I'll continue translating until I get better.

 

@angie_sash , just follow your common sense. Korean translates weirdly. My rule of thumb is just edit it to where it makes sense to the reader. That probably was the intent of the author.
