I just read Er Gen's new novel and I was a bit disappointed I guess. In part, I think the humourous MC kinda just lack depth for me compared to the darker MC's. The whole setting kinda went a genre change from action/thriller to gag and the shift is more of a 180 degrees turnover rather than a nice balance between the two. For me at least. Was just wondering is it just me or are there other people that share the same sentiments

    I love Er Gem!

Though honestly I do like both. The stories are as interesting as ever. I also know that authors are also people and they do get bored writing the same thing over and over. It's only natural that they want to write something different after devoting a whole year or more to writing a single story with the same main character.

Do fix your title before more of us make fun of your typo.

I don't like comedy in Xianxia, simply for the fact that the author like to use it to break the suspend of belief as well as stomp on the serious situation without any consideration for the plot's perspective.

I prefer a dark, serious battle where there is no talk at all than one that had two people kept dropping one joke after another while trying to fight to their death.

Well, Er Gen's novels are dropping in quality. His strong point is tragedy.

You know RI and POT were his earlier works. With the tone of ISSTH and the success it got, I guess he felt more confident in light-hearted works. Both ISSTH and AWE were massive successes. His formula works so he is going to do that. I personally think RI and POT are his best works and AWE was not up to the mark of these two.

There is another problem with ISSTH and AWE is that they become more and more cliche. RI and POT are unique is that they focus on the more mature and dark side of cultivation. The problem with cultivation novels is that they all are practically tournament, arranged marriage/marriage breaking, poison sex, random power ups, dumb lucky MCs and romance (whether solo or harem) that makes little to no sense. On the other hand, Er Gen managed to fix these issues in RI and ISSTH. That darkness showed a different side of cultivation from stupidity, sunshine and rainbows that ISSTH, AWE and most of other CN novels show. Even such aspects and ruthless MC, in most novels they are appear just like inborn killers or have 2-3 sentences about that, while Er Gen managed to develop this aspect and show how relatively normal and kindhearted people became someone who could be named as God of Death and THE Devil...

I would say that WB is more edgy than BXC.

WB is the name of the protagonist of A World Worth Protecting.
    BXC is Bai Xiaochun
    AWE is A Will Eternal

This isn't aimed at anyone in this thread, but... I disagree with the idea that darker / brooding / navel-gazing content is somehow more mature and original than the alternative. Kind of smacks of the same literary snobbery you get in the whole pure entertainment vs literary value argument. Both are good in their own way :blobhero:

It's fine to dislike the standard xuanhuan fare (which primarily focuses on delicious face-slapping, treasure finding, OP MC crushing assholes, etc. for the enjoyment of a certain kind of reader), but just because you don't like something doesn't mean it's bad or cliche.
