    What's up with the fatty best friend trope in CN novels? Why are they so common? When did this start? What's so good about it? The only info I know is that fatties are considered "cute" in China.

    I believe someone made a similar thread like a month or so ago.

    comic relief maybe? All of the fatties seem to be characters to laugh at.

    I don't read Chinese xuanhuan and xianxia, but I never thought that it was a common trope to them... well you can ask the Japanese for having perverted hopeless jealous bestfriend

    They're there to make the MC look good in comparison as well as the NTR threat being non-existent if you're the only perfect alpha male near your waifus. Random fatty is just there to give a thumbs up as you get laid.

    First of all, being MC trumps being fat, second of all first one bulks up and is not fat and second one completely changes and is only fat at the start.

    Obviously i'm over-generalizing , in-depth analysis doesn't get likes. Anyway, the fatty never competes over MC's women and often MC finds him a girl or the girl is not a celestial beauty that the reader would desire in their self-insert harem.

    It's the legacy of zhu bajie (pigsy). The fat guy who is comic relief and unreliable usually but you know that he will come to bat for MC when he needs it.

    Also the laughing Buddha is a pretty well known figure in Chinese culture, so jolly and upbeat dispositions which are good for bf positions are more likely to be assigned to a fatty (or some cunning guy who is a thief)
