Do you think age matters in a discussion?
Like... if an 18-year-old is arguing with a 60-year-old about a topic. Do you think the probability of one being in the right is higher (without any additional information known to you, such as level of education), or is it always 50/50.

    Now a follow-up question.
Do you think that you're smarter, dumber, or indistinguishable from yourself from 5 years ago?
Use whatever metric you want to decide what 'smarter/dumber' means.

    edit:
What I got from this thread was that...
Unfortunately, it seems my chu2 thoughts from my teenage years isn't a common experience among ~20-year-old NUF users. Somehow, I'm a bit embarrassed by that. :p

Well, regarding the age thing, i think it depends on the topic and whether knowledge and experience is important in the topic of discussion. if we assume that the subject matter is something both people know well about, with neither having experience, then no, age does not matter.

i think i'm more knowledgeable then the me from 5 years ago, though my maturity level has probably not risen much lol.

The idea of food for thought is that it can get people thinking, and ideally start a discussion around their thoughts.

Though clearly, this thread of mine isn't doing a good job of that

Age matters in discussion depending on the topic of your discussion.
If I was a newborn, certainly 5 years later I would be smarter. The same if I was 10, at age 15 I would be smarter. But your intelligence is like an s-curve, you just learn/know/understand enough that you cannot learn/know/understand anymore.

so a 16 yr old basing on statistics if its asian than chances of either being right is 50/50 desu~
but if its say..... westerner (so i sound equally racist) than old guy would be wrong 60 % of the time but kid would be wrong -60 % cause they might get triggered and make a meme about it desu~

Well considering I was 12 y.o. five years back and I only learned what the internet ACTUALLY is with 11 you could say I changed a lot. But I mean that's probably typical in your teens with puberty and what not.

I would think that it has less to do with age and more to do with your knowledge about the topic, and most of the time growing older also means that you had more exposure to the topic and looked into it and learned more about it.

So in that sense then yes I am smarter than myself from 5 years ago but that does not mean I was dumb back then, it just means I had more time to learn know.

It does matter, imo. If you are older, you should be smarter than the kid you are arguing with. Cause you've more experience and all that shite.

The fact that your asking this question, my wisdom is telling me that you are under the age of 20.

If those two posses same degree of information. There's One thing that my 18 years old me couldn't beat current me. Wich is wisdom and experience, the way I see the world is different than 18 years old me.

The people in the older generation usually have been through whatever we are going through and can give better advice. If it's about a topic in which the older generation has no knowledge on, they can still give good advice based on their similar experiences. Basically they have more experiences and have a higher chance about being right in general.

I think I'm smarter from the me 5 years ago in some aspects like maturity and knowledge.

Have you ever seen Baby Geniuses?

Anyway, it depends OP, just as it always does. I wouldn't trust a 60 year old to wield a computer like a teenager, but I wouldn't trust a teenager to understand a bomb shelter like I would a 60 year old
