I help translation websites get approved to display Google ads. Basically I run my own ad network. I work with Google Partners to screen websites and a site failed in getting approval for the reason below :

A translation website was flagged for stealing their own translations because the pirate site has more traffic lol.
    It is painfully funny
It is like kissasian sending Viki a DMCA.

Or xianxia world or babel realm sending webnovel.com a DMCA ...

    Wow

So theoretically, if enough people visit a certain translation site, which happens to have lots of novels from webnovel, they could make webnovel seem to be the pirate site in question?

Lol can't say but it's a new translator. I usually find translators using free WordPress websites and set them up with a custom domain name
Basically, in essence, since the domain name is new. The website owned by the actual translator comes off as an upstart lol

Yes and people say that pirate websites do no harm.

Hmmm. Yeah, that sucks. I'd probably put up a boycot myself. Heh. Issue a statement about what is going on then say the translator is taking a 2-3 month haitus to stockpile chapters. Let the pirate site suffer.

It isn't really a rational thing for a lot of people who depend on the web traffic to make an income though, but it is an option to kick the pirate site in the teeth when they are forced to stop copying content. Generate enough publicity about it and it'll collapse.

This does work as pirate sites can forget to scrape content if you take a long enough break and when readers search for new chapters, the translation website will be at the top
Although it screws readers but then again some readers deserve it.
Splitting chapters into pages also caused an issue as scrappers only copied page one haha

Yes but it is hypocrisy at its finest .
Ad companies like Google want unique content.
But websites like Huffington Post used to do refuse to pay creators .
    The same with Syosetu
And those who prefer pirate websites.
You are not paying for content but want new and unique content to be created..
    Who covers the production costs?
It is like expecting the goose to lay eggs when you don't feed it.
You do not pay medical doctors with exposure why must content creators be any different?
One can argue that novels can also improve your mental health the same way a doctor can.
I think humans are just stupid.
Fewer authors means fewer unique stories and a lesser chance to get the next Mushouko Tensei, Death March, Youjo Senki, Coiling Dragon, Emperor of Soloplay etc

It's only a bad idea because of numbers. You would need a sizable chunk of tlers to do this to hurt a pirate site.

Webnovel is a pirate site too. They've taken a lot of works from places like royalroadl and refuse to take them down when authors complain. International copyright isn't really enforced in China. There is a reason that the majority of counterfeit goods worldwide come from China.

Well, that's bad. First, most TL sites still work with gray areas without authors authorizing, even after Quillian has come onto the market.

The problem is also if you somehow try to claim that the TL site is the first one to create something, and the aggregator site is the true pirate, from the ads' point of view the main point after a person has seen what is going on should be to ban the use of the service for both.

But from TL site point there is nothing more to lose so try still to point it out to the ads provider so on the other end the pirate take his part from this bitter cake.

Google works in grey area. They won't ban translators.
The issue is proving who originated the content

I'm laughing my guts out here!!!!
But honestly, I wonder how often something like this happens? I mean pirate sites usually do have more traffic since its easier to go to different stories on one site compared to having to navigate through a variety of sites that each have their own unique layout

This is not a big problem. Novelupdates is a perfect solution as it has links for all the chapters of translators. It has a better search system, rankings, reviews etc so most will find it easy to use translator website. We can also read more comments on translator website and support the translator to release more chapters.

Pirate site could get more views if the translator website layout is very bad but even that could be fixed with some browser apps. It could be also because of paywalls, new novels with very few chapters or missing chapters/novels. Anyway, it is quite different compared to manga scene, mangaupdates does not have any links to chapters. Pirate manga websites also have better search, rankings etc so it is easier to use compared to mangaupdates.

Now that I think about it, it looks like novelupdates is doing a pretty perfect job for translators and readers.
