i think ASUS X550 JK-DM160H is sufficient. But lower hd space might be a concern.

Although the button one has higher resolution, the graphic vram will be fill up in no time lowering your performance, but it really doesn't matter since you will lower the resolution to play game.

The top one only has a pure 240 GB SSD which would require you to carry an external hdd for work/storage, whereas the button one is a hybrid hdd with more space (750GB \w 24GB SSD as cache). Hybrid harddrive may not be as fast as SSD, but they are still plenty faster than a pure harddrive.

What I find annoying is that they do not include not specification information such as wifi technology

What type of games are planning on running and what type of classes are you taking? The more information available the easier it is to determine what you need.

Since you're going to use it for school then a desktop is out of the question so the issue now is to determine if you need something dedicated to gaming or something more school suited that can be used for gaming

What's his field of studies as well. For example, is he in Multimedia studies since they require a lot of ram? (16GB RAM FTW!)

You still might be better of going with a cheap utility laptop for work/school and a separate mini gaming pc at home it would still probably be cheaper than a good gaming laptop and last you much longer. You could even go console/laptop if you really want

I haven't looked it up, but there are probably slightly different specs, such as one having a 128 gb SSD and the other having a 256; things like that

As a person who experiences 'gaming' laptop, I will say and sure that both of them does not combine well.

i'd suggest getting an ultrabook for school, and a proper PC for gaming and multimedia.
