I only have Xianxia and Wuxia on my vocabulary. Now, there are new terms that might actually confused me but thanks for the info @Parth37955

You don't actively start a trend. It just happens. You think we all knew what Xianxia meant a year and a half ago? Please.

Well you guys might as well get a full 'education' on it than a distorted one so that the future readers might not fall under such state where they will think that novels are either wuxia or xianxia

If we keep using the terms then we will sooner get use to it like how someone tell me what is eechi and for the first time I don't know it but I check it and your brains register it

To do my part, I'll stop referring to these stories as Xianxia and call them Xuanhuan in chats. That'll help. Some of the people there already stop calling them Xianxia.

This wholly depends on how lazy people are. Like me, I'm to lazy to make and effort in this, but should it happen over time? Who knows. Somethings might stick.

my, that's pessimistic...I didn't really make this for that. This was more for clarification than anything. If Tony makes the others genres too, then there gonna need to be something to explain it all.
p.s. if something happens to ISSTH, first one I'm looking for is you.

I am okay with this thread all he is trying to do is make a list of terms for Chinese novel genres. I never actually knew about this until I read this thread. Some of you might be suggest or hint it is pointless but imo its nice to know these terms so I understand the Chinese novel scene more. Like how I slowly learn what some Japanese English terms (romanji) are I will learn some of the different words in Chinese (pinyin) are. Hopefully people will read this and understand and tag series better afterwords.

I wonder about the term xia as hero, if I'm not mistaken (perhaps I'm wrong, can't really remember), in the romance of three kingdom novels by Luo Guanzhong, Cao Cao ask Liu Bei who he think are the heroes in their era.

Liu Bei then listed people like Yuan Shao, Yuan Shu, Sun Ce, etc where Cao Cao said they're not heroes and pointed at their weaknesses and why they won't achieve anything in their life.

Finally Liu Bei asked him then who he think the heroes of that era then?

And Cao Cao said, it was he, Liu Bei and him Cao Cao.

As far as I can understand, the hero in their conversation rather pointed at someone who have the ability to do something great rather than pointed at righteousness, etc. Since Liu Bei are known for his benevolence, but Cao Cao could use some cruel method to achieve his goal. Of course one could argue that Cao Cao's goal is to bring peace and order, despite his cruel method, you could say he is righteous in that sense.

Not to detract from your point, but English speakers actually use almost half of those words differently than how Japanese speakers would use them. Ecchi, hentai, shounen-ai, yaoi, shoujo-ai, and yuri as it's used in English does not mean the same in Japanese.

For instance, people in Japan don't call sexually explicit anime "hentai" I believe they call it "porno" or "ero" anime. There are more nuances than this, but I'm not well versed in it.

Ehhh, side-tracking a bit... as far as I'm aware of, usually use the terms "エロ/エッチ アニメ/動画 / た映像" are used. So hentai anime would be "エロアニメ" aka "ero-anime". It is preferred to use the term ero and ecchi over just plain "ポルノ" aka "poruno" most of the time.

Xia? Do we have even one true xianxia novel translated? It literally means chivalrous, noble hero - at most you'll see those kinds as tragic side-characters in 'xianxia'... there are exceptions, tho.

Example: Meng Hao is actually an anti-hero, he is not chivalrous, uses underhanded methods all the time.

Rather than being picky about MC's code of conduct, i'd rather have an easy-to-remember tag for chinese fantasy stories which have no actual immortality involved. Also, I think that Western/Eastern setting is too vague, since even aforementioned CD has elements of both, just like most other modern xianxia stories.

Xianxia literally means Immortal Hero, but they do not need to be "heroes". ISSTH is a classical Xianxia novel for example.
