GT, 17k, and Zongheng megamerge thread

It processed like this:
- GGP got an agreement with ZH about licensing novel.
- He came to Zenith, told us GT intended to license IA and wanted to buy my translations.
- I agreed (that's the only way I can continue to be IA translator, IF he got IA license). IA moved to GT.
- Two weeks later, GT told me they couldn't host IA anymore, because they couldn't "take the risk" like WW did with TI. Their reason was that IA (obiviously, since it's an Infinity-genre novel) used materials from other works like movie, anime...
- GGP still owned my translaton from the first chapter to v3c15, so I doubted that other team can help.
The problem isn't that I can't publish more chapters. It was that IA have no editor right now and my "unedited" translation maybe not quality enough for readers.

To clarify,
1) did you sign a contract that transferred(not granted, this is important) the rights to your translation to GT?
2) And if so did this contract state that it was contingent on him acquiring the IA license?
3) Did GT acquire the license?

If you can answer, if you're under nda on the specifics then nvm

2) No. GGP said that he needed the rights of traslations to negotiate with ZH, so we done this before he acquired IA license.
3) No (as I know)

 

Ouch. You'd need to re-translate from the start, unless you can buy the rights back, or get GT to grant you the rights. And given it's current ownership, that could be tricky.

Technically, you can't even host your old chapters.

 

I don't think either of them is possible. First, I can't re-translate IA to something different. I had my own style, knowledge and understanding; so I'm pretty sure that even I re-translate the new ones will be 95% similar to the old ones. Second, I don't have enough money.

 

As long as you actually redo it and the unedited version is different, then it should be fine. That said, GT could make it a headache for you and attempt to force you to prove it. So... ugh.

It's unfortunate.

 

All I want is more readers enjoy IA. I don't like the stealing sites, but don't care much about them because readers in these sites knew about IA anyway.
What I fear is that if I provide low-quality translations, many ones will turn their back to IA (On NU page, the 2-star review had the most likes)

 

Get an editor, and unless your TL is near MTL, it should be fine.

 

Those are just from haters of the infinity genre. Don't mind them. Just advertise a bit on NU.

 

If I can get enough money to pay for editing, this problem isn't existed from the beginning. I like IA much and can translate for free, but it's unfair to require editor work for free like me.

 

Make an announcement about it saying that you want a free editor (haha this sounds so bad:/)
I mean depending on the schedule, I would edit chapters for you for free (although whether I'm qualified or not I'm not sure).

 

And if zenith is still hosting, that makes things less problematic, as you can just host the new chapters.

You wouldn't really need to contact them about it. Just link to them for the earlier chapters. They still have them up, providing your readers with a place to read up to the new chapters, while avoiding the need to provide traffic to undesirable sites.

You'd need to host that yourself of course, or work out a deal with another translation host.

Right. You don't need to post anything or make a change. You'd just be linking there so people reading the story have a place to start or re-read earlier chapters. You'd be posting the new chapters on your own site, or another site you've gotten a hosting agreement with.

As much as I appreciate the translator of Zhan Long. It was painful to read the plot.
