The last emperor of the Ming Dynasty (afterward would be Qing Dynasty, then WWII, then the modern day China now), at the end of his reign, after personally slaughtering all his wives and daughters, he committed suicide by hanging himself on a crooked tree, ending his life and the 300+ years of his family's reign over China. Later in the Qing Dynasty that follow, one emperor recounted this occurrence, and wrote a banner and placed it on the grand hall of the palace that translates roughly to "(walk in) righteousness and light" to remind himself and all his people to remember how the Ming Dynasty had fallen, and do not stray into their crooked and evil ways. The other result is a lot easier to visualize. In this case the crooked tree quite literally means a crooked tree, and that whoever it was used to describe is simply inferior, subpar, or defected. That phrase in its original form should be, "There's no need to drive yourself into a corner so much that you end up hanging yourself on a tree." in a attempt to warn people against (or talk them out of) being so overly fixated and obsessed over one thing that they lose sight of everything else, and then later iteration of the phrase took the "crooked tree" into it and became, "There's no need to... ...on a tree, especially on that's crooked (i.e. unworthy of you)." Though I'm not particular sure, I do suspect that it should be the latter of the two that fits the meaning of the story you're translating. A girl's friend comforting her about her problems with her boyfriend or love interest perhaps? (EDIT: Actually, it also sets itself up perfectly for a, "See, I already told you, don't get so hung up over that piece of trash (crooked tree) ..." ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)..... eh? No one? Alright... OTZ
