Discussion How do you interpret 'rating'?

While rating have official meaning behind them (Bad-Poor-OK-Good-Super), we all know that average rating does not follow the official meaning. So, how do you interpret the your rating and average rating?

My own rating:
5: Very good. No glaring flaw. I could recommend this.
4: Well, there are a few points that could be criticised, but enjoyable nonetheless.
3: Bah, average mass garbage. Only read when there is nothing else to read. Or a guilty pleasure.
2: No good, too many flaws. Keep away from it.
1: This... this is a crime to humanity. An insult to human intelligence. Seriously no. Just... No.

Average rating:
4.5+: Either this is awesome, or its rating has yet to stabilised.
4.3~4.5: Could be a good read. Could be.
4.0~4.3: Risky, might try it if I'm bored.
3.7~4.0: Very risky, what am I doing here? This is going to be bad.
3.7-: Forget it. It is either horrible, or offensive, or both.

 

I take a dab at it and forget about it mostly. You are pretty into it though.

 

The way I vote, 2 and below are trash, 3 and above are worth checking.
As for the NU rating - I don't look at it at all (as there are always some idiots voting "0").
What I look at is the most frequent and second most frequent votes, and their differences.

 

I don't put any stock in them at all.

 

Have you ever looked at some CN novel ratings they may have a massive audience but the ratings do not reflect the quality of the work.

 

I don't look at the average rating
I look at the real numbers

and if there is so many 5 rate on it it mean that many have enjoyed reading it, i will consider reading it too

oh right! and i don't count the 1 as real vote since there are many trolls who vote 1 just for the fun of it or they its just not their cup of tea

 

Ratings don't really determine the quality on the novels. With all the 5s and the 1s .
So dont really pay attention to them. But if its below 3.7 honestly experience has shown most of time its pretty bad.

 

NU rating is useless.

 

I dunno, i just read to see if the novel is to my taste, or at least reading eligible comments, not mad rants, before trying out. To each has own taste.

 

Ratings don't matter but if you really want me to choose something like that, it would be at 3.0
Also add more options to the poll.... Just coz you think everyone differentiates at such a high rating like you doesn't mean that it is true.
Also such things don't really have a clear differentiation, a clear limit or demarcation.

 

I'm not that picky and perfectionist when it come to others' works (ofc, unless it's mine), so I just stick on to the basic Bad-Poor-OK-Good-Super kinda rating, but I would always drop some critic here and there.. define those decimals in text form.

 

Nothing critical. I haven't read most of the books in this site to find a median to base on. Will rate depending on whether I enjoyed it and noticed flaws during the first read-through.

5 - I enjoyed the story, and didn't notice any critical flaws
4 - I enjoyed the story, with some flaws that stand-out, although they don't really derail the story
3 - Either the story is boring, or there is/are flaw/s in the story that ignores precedent rules; read only if you have time to kill
2 - I hated the story
1 - I hated the story AND the flaws are inexcusable

I don't look at average ratings. If I read a negative review that convinces me to avoid a story, I will avoid it, rating be damned.

 

I would like to disagree. There are a lot of novels with ratings less than 3.7 that are really good.

 

All ratings are skewed, if a novel contains elements which the majority of readers despise, usually the novel gets low ratings and negative reviews. For eg:- Soaring the Heavens, The Gate of Good Fortune, etc

But u can ascertain the quality of the writing by reading a few chapters, so I suggest u try reading and not rely too heavily on ratings.

Imho, I don't look at average rating. Instead,I look at the percentage of 4/5. The higher it is, the better and more stable the novel is.
When I give a rating, I am very lenient with 3 being the most ordinary novel nothing good about it.
Generally, I write reviews and if it says a novel is Mango approved, it means that it is worth reading imo.

 

It's a bad habit, but I usually don't give those below 4 stars a chance. I don't really have all the time in the world to check out each and every one of them. You might argue that, "but the true gems are those below 4*!" but like what, you expect me to check out each and every one of them to see if they're good? I'll give it a chance if someone else recommends it, but otherwise, I don't read below 4*.

Apart from the bottom line 4* though, I actually don't care about the rating. I just need that peace of mind that enough people like it.

What, should I feel horrible for it? I'm not some pretentious self-righteous MC, I'm not gonna bother hiding or change it. I too have been through times where I've read each and every novel that I could find had more than 200 chapters in it, and I've known by now just how much time I wasted on it. I don't read 14 hours a day like I used to, reading webnovels is just something I do during commute or in school when there's no internet now.

I did learn from reading shitty novels how to recognize shit though, so I have to be thankful for that at least. Made me appreciate better novels more and know just how rare they actually are.

Your chart is a bit biased on the high side imo

Unless it's rated absolute trash, say <2 I'm willing to give it a shot. Most of the time, provided there are enough reviews and the score is lower than 2, then it must have some issue. From bad novel to terrible TL's and edits. I've found a few that I ended up liking around 3.3 and lower ~~

 

I convert rating to my own version
By a formula

(Nuf rating)+(2 if qi novel)-1(if its synopsis is lame)+2(if its release rate is less than 1)-1(if its reviews are bad) +1( if its reviews are very good)
So rating becomes out of 10

Then i read title of novel and give no fuck to the above calculated rating and just read/not read of my own mood
