The best way to mtl is to use a professional software. A paid one.
but, even with the highest quality mtl, it cant be compared to the lowest manual translation.

A guy with lvl 4 HSK could translate better than the best edited MTL.
You could easily achieve lvl 4 HSK just by learning Chinese for around half a year. Ofc, by learning it intensively.

That said, lvl 4 is not enough to properly translate any novel. Lvl 5 is the very minimum for it.
But, you’d probably need to learn more than a year to be able to reach lvl 5.

I did. And i feel any lvl 4 could do it better.

While i did say it cant be compared, i didnt meant it to be impossible to read.
It’s just you need a certain lvl of chinese expertise to even able to edit it right.

And even if they did edited it, it’ll be better if they just translated it manually. By a lot.

To steal this thread a bit, does anyone know the simplest way to bulk MTL a bunch of chapters or a whole novel at once? I read while listening to the Mandarin audiobook, so I don't need a perfect translation, just some help figuring out new words.

Google translate has limits of how much it will translate at once, even if you use the translate document feature, it still doesn't go too far with how much of the document it will translate.

There isn't any magical way to MTL better I'm afraid. There is a good reason people don't rely on it too much.

Just accept that the result you'll get won't be great and move on.
