How many translations should one person take up at a time? I have a few novels that I wanna TL but I don't know what's a good number. It's not necessarily just about the release frequency, I'm wondering if I'll get sick of some novels if I pick up too many...

Start with one. Ifyou have the capacity and capability to do more, then do more.

As many as you can handle.

Take me for instance, it takes 3 hours for me to translate about 100 words.

Quite frankly, that means I'm limited to 1x 500 character chapter a week. And that basically means I should only focus on 1 translation project until I can improve my speed.

Then there are those that are fully capable of translating twice that much in a day. They can handle more if they want.

As a reader I would prefer the dedicated ones, but I can imagine the 2nd and the 3rd option being more preferable to the translator to get some more variation in their translating

I stick with as much as one can handle. If you're making translating your job, then you're probably fine with doing a few series weekly releases. If you're looking to do patreon for more chapters, then you're likely going to be doing a few a day. With that it just depends on how many different series you want to do since you're already doing at least 5-8 hours a day of translating.

    I'm of a similar view.

2 at most. 3 if your some sort of super TL. Any more than that and you risk losing readers if the pace slows for some reason and you can only do a single chapter (at all) a week.

I think one dedicated project, with some small ones to the side. Short stories or one offs, can give verity when needed and doesn't take focus away from the main project.

Sometimes the second novel is more interesting than the first.

Tbh you'll probably get sick even with one novel. You might as well take them all, but the less often you release the more poachable you'll seem. Not to mention, unless you maintain a high release rate (I'd say at least daily for chinese and every 5-7 days for JP) you'll get less readers and a greater proportion of complaints about your speed.

I had two picked out but then I found this one that looked damn amazing so I wanted to do it too...
Now I'm just going to do the new one and pick one from the two I've already picked out. I'll TL the one that get's leftover if it's not picked up by the time I'm like 50 chaps in

I'm not sure what language you want to TL in or what you proficiency is, but until you get used to the story I would recommend starting with 1 especially if you actually have a real life too. Then as long as you keep a consistent release (whatever you decide it to be) should be fine with however many you pick up. this gets a lot easier if you catch up to the raws as well.

    its like marriage hahahaha.

well i am not a translator so this is just my personal experience with games just wanted to put my 2 cents :D

Honestly? As much as you want.

Translate whatever you want at whatever pace you want.

Readers will probably be happier with the fewer series you translate, but... Eh? Just pick enough to make you happy, really.

1-2 if you’re serious about finishing a project.

Getting a third suddenly makes it difficult to finish any of your projects.

As an insane translator with 5 on going projects, it honestly depends on the material and time. I can translate 3-4 different story chapters a week, but none of them are more than 10 pages. One of the is actually only 2-3 pages long per chapter. The biggest reason I can pull this off is because three of them aren’t very difficult to translate. Those three are always consistant with their releases. The difficult ones... they get released, but it isn’t unusual for there to be delays. Sorry ‘bout that.

—There’s actually another abandoned story that caught attention, but I’m not touching that until I finish one of my projects...

Depends on the translation speed, length of the raw, frequency of release(Both raw and translated). Personally, 3-4 is a good rotation.
On the contrary, I think having multiples would instead prevent you from getting sick of the novels?
    It keeps it fresh.

Or you could just start from one and increase if you feel like you can handle it (`・ω・´)
At the end of the day, it's fine as long as you're enjoying it.
    I guess.

if that's the case, then you're honestly good to TL as many as you want within your free time. If you were like me and it takes 4-6 hours to do a short chapter (since I don't speak, write, or read japanese which is what I tried to do) then your limit should be 1, but with that capability start slow to get a bunch built up in case you ever get busy and can't TL then pick up more as time goes on.
