How Not to Respond to a License Notice: Roxism HQ and Nozomanu Fushi no Boukensha

    Hi, I'm the head of J-Novel Club, and thought I'd make a post here about something that just happened.

    We announced that we'd licensed Nozomanu Fushi no Boukensha (The Unwanted Undead Adventurer) yesterday.
    Roxism HQ has been translating the web novel, and has like ~30 chapters on their website, but they also have an additional 20+ chapters locked behind Patreon tiers... If you want to read the latest chapter from them, you actually have to be a $100 supporter!
    Completely ridiculous. Plus their translation quality is... MTL + no-native editing level basically.

    So, I email them demanding they remove the chapters from their Patreon and website since we've already finished 50% of volume 1 of the LN anyway, and they are profiting in blatant copyright violation without supporting the author at all.

    Do they respond to my email? Nope.

    Instead, they go and add a "[FANFIC]" label to all the translations, and a disclaimer that says:

    Warning ! EVERYTHING IN THIS SECTION IS A FANFIC FOLLOWING THE ORIGINAL CREATION OF THE AUTHOR, EVERY SIMILIAR EVENT, NAME, LOCATION, AND ANY OTHER THINGS HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ORIGINAL SERIES!!!

    Let me be clear here: this is insulting. Do they seriously think pretending their crappy translations are just "fanfic" is going to prevent their Patreon account from being shut down when we DMCA them?
    As a community of ACTUAL fans will you let people like this steal money from you?

    J-Novel Club membership is $5 a month, and we release... ~60-80 chapters or so! Per month! Each chapter is ~30 pages long! Even if you only read 1-2 series from us it's still way, WAY more content for your money.

    Supporting people like this on Patreon or otherwise is RIPPING YOU OFF, and not supporting the original authors (or legal copyright) one bit.

    I think the people here at novel updates understand that I don't mind fans translating for fans that doesn't get in the way of official translation. But these people aren't fans, they're just crooks trying to swindle you out of money.

    Not to mention novelupdates doesn't list "fanfic", so delete the links in the novelupdates database, right?

    Though, even if it's MTL, they are doing the WN version right? And you guys are licensing and doing the LN version right? Or both version so similar that just 1 version is enough so licensing mean WN version also need to shutdown? Cause I thought WN version meaning....you know, Web Novel that is Free for all on the internet, while the Official Light Novel version is the one really need to be concern about and need to be shutdown if there is Official English version.(Unless the Author himself said to Stop Translating his novel, then it's for Both WN and LN for fan translations)
    Or if they are actually leaning on the LN version then nevermind what I said above.

    He's translating the WN, you're translating the LN. Isn't that different or the contract mentioned that you also have the right to WN?
