Yes, they also have disappointing personalities too, but since their disappointment of a brain still led them to breakthroughs in cultivation, they aren't disappointments.

There's a whole spiel I have over why cultivators don't make sense in the first place, but that will be a story for another time.

step 2: have a strong dao heart to overcome all obstacles and have a clear goal to work towards and have many smaller goals to reach said big goal
step 3: after understanding the dao start to attune it to your body to have it affect thee.

prerequisites:
1) attain knowledge
2) understand knowledge (have a great teacher so you can understand it better)
3) don't tamper with the dao in anyway for removing parts you don't understand makes you remove power and makes it more complex or simple in the wrong way
4) use the protagonist as a human cauldron

 

Dao really is just a purest form of a belief..

Rigorously tested through trial and error..

One must be so certain of the belief that even if the whole world says no, you don't budge..

That means that law, code, belief has grown so deep that it transcends biological barriers, transcended mortal affairs..

Because the tribulation usually happens when you're at the edge of ascending into a realm that can lead into challenging the heavens. What truly happens after overcoming it is usually your body getting used to its level of power and after leveling up. The tribulation is to stop you from leveling up and if you can't handle it then you die and if you survive and overcome it your basically adjusting to higher level attacks. It isn't really a test but more like a death sentence. The Heavens doesn't reward unless you are the Heaven's Chosen One.

Geniuses not only cultivate faster, they cultivate "better" and cultivate "farther." Not just cultivation roots, but even the direction they go is a limiting factor. These "geniuses" also have luck on their side; virtually every epiphany is a guaranteed leap forward in the right direction.

Just because you are a cultivator doesn't mean you can't be a disappointment. A salesman that's been running on empty for several years is a disappointment in the eyes of his/her company, and will probably be replaced soon. A salesman that was successful in the past but lost his/her spark in the recent years is still a disappointment, and will also probably be replaced soon.

The measurement of disappointment is relative to the society. To at the very least not be considered a disappointment, you have to at least keep pace with the average growth, whether average growth is disappointing in the first place is a different topic. "Greater" cultivators follow a higher rate of growth, and then you have the completionist genius that practically increases his/her cultivation just by breathing. Literally.

It's in stages because cultivation has a sort of tiered-evolution pattern, but quite frankly, it's just because the author decided to write it like that.

Cultivation Heaven is an idiot, but they aren't this idiotic depending on the set of beliefs it holds.
Deploying tribulation lightning the moment someone even glances at a manual for the first time is obvious overkill, and that world is guaranteed to not have any cultivators any time soon. Or ever.
To begin with, it's just a plot device for the author to advance someone's cultivation.

It's based on the cultivator's own growth. Once their cultivation level reaches its maximum for its respective tier, tribulation will come soon enough. Whatever a tier is.

Won't deny this, though I'm pretty sure it's always because some asshole the MC will overthrow at some point is playing god with the will of heaven if the author's going for a crap ton of realms and tiers.

I don't understand why you would think hell is better at management if you found heaven incompetent. You're suggesting a group of people who are probably morally and ethically just as bad or far worse than the ones running heaven. Unless heaven's ruled by a group (possibly a group of one) of heartless, megalomaniac, absolutely fucking retards, hell's probably going to end the universe a lot sooner.

Unless when stating hell, you meant the underworld, to which yeah, they would likely do just as good or much better than heaven.
