I was listening to a wuxia novel while designing and a member of my family heard a part of the novel the problem is in chinese novels they call people from the same age and standing sister , or brother depending on their gender , so how do I explain to someone that don't read chinese novels that sister is not as in blood sister but martial sister or younger female and the story is not about incest but sects and cultivation
Men in the military tend to call other guys as brothers. Not to mention some races tend to call those of the same race as brothers/sisters as a way to strengthen racial pride.
A fellow brethren on the path of cultivation. Teacher as a father, fellow brothers and sisters of your sect, with a strict ranking hierarchy ending up with junior and senior. p.s. Or just show them some real incest so they can see the difference for themselves.
Part of Chinese culture is people referring to others, especially friends, as brother, sister, aunt, uncle, etc. They can also call cousins as brother or sister. It does not mean that this is their blood related role, it's more of a custom or acknowledgement.
Nuns are sisters, and monks are brothers in western monestaries. From that it's easier to state that sects are like monestaries except instead of god worship they practice martial arts, spiritualism, and/or work towards enlightenment.
Just explaining that to them is fine, but if you want an example just say “hey, bro” (like calling your friends “bro” even though you’re not related)
Draw out the family/relationship tree and say that this is their relations. Then, explain the cultural dynamics and language usage. That's all you can do. However, just know that you really don't need biological factors to have incest. If you did, why would step-siblings and adoptive siblings still have stigmatism if they got together?
Actually I have a similar question. I was about to enter a building when I saw the door was marked "PUSH" I know that I need to push the door to open it. How do I push the door so I can open it and go inside the building?
Could be the lack of exposure? They must have not encountered it much nor aware of certain cultural references.
Just tell them the story is about a school that teach people how to do martial art. Your class teacher is called master. Other class teacher are called aunts and uncles. And all the student are called brothers or sisters
um China is not unique in this aspect, as I would argue the vast majority of the world does the same thing. It's hard to believe your brother is that dense to not realize this...Like what's there to even explain? Is he living under a rock ? Even in the US, people call each other that in religious institutions, in war depicted in movies/tv shows (comradery) , or even just "bro" as part of casual speech. Seems like common sense.
