Oh, okay. That's honestly impressive (also explains why you didn't mention a couple of things: I thought they just hadn't caught your interest :sweating_profusely:). Give me an hour or two to get home and I'll send them to you.

"Didn't mention a couple of things"? Are there things I missed? Well, I use JPMTL and Syoustesu to read the novel, otherwise, I have all four volumes of the manga with the exclusion of the 4p leaflet the artist made :blobcry:.

Sorry, I really wasn't trying to be patronising. I meant things that were in the Ongarn novel chapters but not in the manga, like how Octavia gets locked up in her room every night for security reasons. Or some of the heavy hints about Clifford's relationship to his two masters.

Oh, no, no! You weren't patronizing at all. I was just generally confused, because I wondered what I missed in relation to Clifford. I mean I knew I was maybe missing a chapter related to Clifford but I thought maybe it didn't have a title and I was overlooking something. I am re-reading the novel more carefully because it has a lot of tea to spill.

Also, you're an angel! Thank you so much for this! I didn't know there was a chapter like that!

I wanna thank @renuac for hooking your girl up! Omg, so much tea to spill about Cliffy and other (but not all) mysteries. :aww::aww::aww::aww::aww::aww::aww::aww::aww::aww::aww::aww::aww:

But first, let’s talk about Clifford’s “A ‘subordinate’ can’t lie his ‘master’” statement, because I've been scratching my head around this for the past few days.

Yeah, that statement itself is a lie! I knew he was sus! :blobphone:But I still love him.:blobsmilehappyeyes::blobmelt::blobsmilehappyeyes::blobmelt::blobsmilehappyeyes:

Here’s why it was possible for him to lie….

There are so far two scenes where the statement has been emphasized.

The first scene is when Clifford and Octavia dance practicing for the ball. When Octavia says that the King, her foster dad, talked to Clifford (she was changing the subject because she was caught staring lolz), Clifford says that the King was worried about her. There’s a loophole right there. Was the King worried about Octavia as Octavia or a person? In the novel, he apparently locks her room at night from the outside for her “protection”. :blobpopcorn_two: HAH! It was because she’s the royal baby-maker, and any damage to her means damage to the future heir. :blobangery: In the past, one of his sisters ran away but was caught. But he started locking her three months ago, same time when Clifford became her knight, obviously implying that he doesn’t trust Clifford a.k.a. Ongarne who may hurt her (You’re the one hurting her, Kingy. :blobangery: Clifford is the one who really cares about her. It hurts him to see her even cry!:blobcat_hyper::blobcat_knife:). Anyways, Clifford might have meant that the King was worried about her as the princess, not as Octavia (otherwise he would’ve cared about her mental health too :blobunamused:, like Clifford!). So, there’s a loophole right there.

The second one was when Octavia asked him if he was the one who saved Sil four years ago in the carriage scene. It was Sil who first asked, and Clifford denied it being him. So then, after Sil dozed off, Octavia personally asked him because she knew that he can’t lie to her, his master. But he still denied it while looking her in the eye. In the novel, it’s revealed that it was him who saved Sil because he was ordered to do so (makes me rethink about who his first master AGAIN. Could it be one of Sil's parents :hmm:? Since Clifford was ordered to save Sil, so it would have to be someone who cares about Sil). At first, I tried to compare the swords of the hooded guy who saved Sil and Clifford’s reminisce of himself, and the generic swords on the battlefield at the time. They’ve cleared that Clifford can lie in the novel, but it’s still a mystery in the manga. Like, why do this? :sweating_profusely:

Here we have the hooded guy in the manga who saved Sil. The only feature was the hooded man was the sword in his hand. Well, mostly the handle of the sword.

Here's Clifford's recollection of himself. The sword in his hand is obscured by, well, his hand. I can just make out a small sphere at the end of the sword's handle. The handle also looks black.

The swords on the battlefield that Clifford fought in the Sazah war have some swords on the gorund. They have the small spheres at the end of the swords' handles. I can't see Clifford's sword because it's shadowed. However, the two images above seem to have a black handle with some linear design on it. These sword handles don't look black and have a bit more design. I mean it's also simple but it's shaped differently. The sword handles in the two images above look straight and flat, if I make any sense.

Of course, I think the entire reason Clifford has that kind of rule, I would say, is maybe because that was what he taught in his clan. A ‘subordinate’ can’t lie their ‘master’. It’s a lot like growing up being told that honesty is the best policy, but everybody lies. It’s a matter of following the set of codes. So, Clifford isn’t “forced” to tell the truth to his master, Octavia. He can choose to lie to her.
Though, it may also be more likely that Clifford can lie but has that rule as maybe a survival thing so that he's not considered a liar while he lies as he breathes lol (I still love him tho). He decided since he was young that he would do whatever it takes to survive and was very goal-oriented. And lying while saying that he doesn't lie is part of that survival.

Of course, I think, now, Clifford's lies to Octavia are more like white lies to protect her. Like telling her that her dad does care about her, while she doesn't believe that the king actually cares about her, to make her feel like she is cared about. And the second lie I think has more to do with him not wanting anything to do with Sill, and not telling Octavia about his past, especially as Ongarne since Ongarne is the scary warrior who also killed soldiers from her kingdom. She might have feared him, especially since she's the princess. And of course, Clifford wouldn't like that since, in his P.O.V, when she took a step back from him when she was crying, he didn't like it one bit.

Thank you for your thank you. :blobpeek:

I have finally summarized "The world seen by the messenger of Ongarne" (オンガルヌの使者』が見る世界). :blobtaco:
And let me tell you, it is beautiful. :aww: Ah, Clifford~:aww: Once again, thank you @renuac.

    So, to summarize:

In volume 1, it’s nighttime and Octavia’s room has to be locked from the outside as she sleeps. That’s a rule King Enoch set (you bastard!:blob_catflip:) because his sister ran away once ran away but was caught. Clifford wasn’t allowed to go near the locked door unless there’s a good reason and he calls it a “gorgeous prison” and how Octavia faces all forms of restraint. She’s never left alone in the daytime unless it’s in her room. In fact, the entire surrounding area of the castle was sealed off! (I mean, seriously wtf!?:blobcurse:).

Obviously, these restraints were for Octavia’s “protection” (HAH! :blobunamused:) because she’s the royal baby-maker. Although they have male descendants, it’s the princesses who have to bear the burden, that’s why they’re treated as treasures to be protected. Clifford thinks, and rightly so, that it’s a curse despite the royal family being blessed by the sky god (that sky god is problematic, Clifford :blobsleepless:). He sees the country as distorted since the gay male members of the royal family can’t have kids of their own, but then he rectifies that maybe they weren’t able to leave any. Enoch was the only one who had his own son, Alexis. Clifford then looks at this from another perspective and thinks that because there are princesses, the men of the royal family can choose same-sex partners. If this collapsed, the distortion would be straightened (Octavia needs to run away (with you)! Elope! Elope!:blobpopcorn_cool::blobpopcorn:).

Then the head lady-in-waiting, who finished locking Octavia’s door from the outside, was uncomfortable (Who wouldn’t be!? I honestly couldn’t stomach this!). She asks Clifford how long this has to go on and, while Octavia doesn’t even voice her dissatisfaction (But would they even listen?), the head isn’t satisfied herself that this is for Octavia’s protection. Clifford replies that the king said that it’ll be until the situation dies down. But I wanna know what situation is that? :blobwoah: He started locking her up three months ago, the same time when Clifford became her escort knight. Apparently, it was “against the forces who would try to destroy the system by killing the only princess” (First, Clifford would never harm her :blobangery:. Her tears bring him discomfort. And second, one way or another, he gonna destroy this system!:blobpeek:).

Then comes the convo between him and Enoch which is the same as in the manga while Octavia is picking a dress for the ball. He tells him not to hurt her which could bring change to the stagnant family, and he’s like I wouldn’t do that but Enoch retorts that he knows he doesn’t want to be her knight, but Clifford replies that it depends on Octavia. The head lady-in-waiting snaps him from his thoughts and begs him to protect her (Octavia’s maids are wholesome af :aww:).

His duties for the day are done and he walks through the corridors, but he has to pass through the grand gallery, which apparently is an honor for escort knights. He saw Alexis there before him, staring up at the ceiling painting for the sky god. Clifford also glanced up at it and noted the royal castle’s “bloodstained history” with its “clean and pure Grand Gallery”, and found it unpleasant. Alexis then looks at him and the convo is the same as when he and Clifford chatted about Clifford’s identity after Octavia goes to speak with the king after dinner. What’s interesting are some of Clifford’s inner thoughts. After Octavia has the Shirushi bond and she calls him Clifford, “it had shaken his emotions:aww:. He also reveals that he had avoided acquiring a new master for so long, especially one he chose out of his own will. Alex then tells him that he can’t trust him, and Clifford agrees in his thoughts. But he found Octavia the weird one because she unashamedly did trust him, thus why she was worthy of being his master (or wife hehe :blobmelt:). Alex tells him to step down as her knight and Clifford’s like did you do the same thing to her other knights and he’s like I’m not telling and someone like you isn’t fit to be near her. Again, in his thoughts, Clifford agrees. But tells Alex “So what?” and only Octavia can tell him what to do :blobxd:. Alex is pissed and tells him if he’s going to fulfill her expectations, and he says as long as Octavia wants him to. And that was his genuine statement. He would protect her, who had become his master. “──For now. Until then” (Yo, what!? :blobwoah: Can you easily leave your shuu-jyuu relationship!? :blobdizzy:). Alex threatens his life if he hurts Octavia, but Clifford says if you can. Alex’s escort knight comes in and tells him to refrain from moving alone at night and Alex tells him not to fuss. Like Octavia, Alex also never kept his knights for long (Probably because they kept falling in love with and forcing themselves on him, whereas Octavia’s knights fell in love with a guy and left their posts lol:cookie:).

Before Alex leaves, Clifford calls out to his back if he liked the Grand Gallery. Alex replies if he did. Clifford says that it’s fitting (Omg, he showed so much sass in novel chapter :blobxd::blobxd::blobxd::blobxd::blobxd:). It’s unsure how Alex interpreted his comment but wiped all facial expressions and he left, with his knight following behind him, after giving a nod to Clifford who responded back. Clifford looked at the ceiling painting again and felt a “discomfort like he hadn’t felt in a long time”. :blobpeek:

So this next part occurs after Octavia bids Alexis goodbye on his mission. Clifford noticed that after Alex went, her face lacked vigor.

She needed a change of pace and asked Clifford if he would oppose it if she took a walk in the garden for a short while. She pointed to the garden used mostly by the castle workers during their break, so royalty and nobility weren’t really expected to use that place and wasn’t something that a princess would like (she’s not like the other princesses, Cliffy :blobnom:). However, in the past three months, Clifford observe that Octavia liked things that weren’t fitting for princesses and it was as if her preferences were closer to those of a commoner “although there was no way it could be true”. Clifford then asks her if that garden is acceptable to her and she says yes, so he says that it’s acceptable to him too then.

She then asks him to keep it a secret from Matilda, the head lady-in-waiting, or else she’ll get angry. Clifford asks if she would really. To him, the head “supported Octavia more than any other member of the royal family” so she wouldn’t get angry (petition to have her as Octavia’s mom blobmelt_thumbs). Octavia tells him that he doesn’t know how terrifying Mathilda can be and one day he’ll understand. He replies that he hopes that day never comes. And Octavia says that it’s true. (I just love their conversations so much :blobcatblush:)

Clifford then notices Lishran flowers growing in the garden. Interestingly, the flower itself is harmless and could be medicinal but its seed has mind-boggling effects for regular use. While the royal castle kept them as ornaments, it’s expensively sold both as medicine and poison after being refined. He wonders if it was coincidental or intentional that Octavia came to a garden full of Lishrans.

Just then, Octavia’s cloak got stuck in a branch and strongly pulled until eventually there was a tear. Clifford asks if she would let him take care of it, because he “couldn’t just stand by and watch, so he offered his help:blobsmilehappyeyes:. He got it untangled from the branch with one hand. She thanks him and tells him that he’s very good with his hands as she looked at him admiringly (Octavia, no! First comes marriage! Then hand holding! :blob_blush::blob_blush:). As he folds the torn cloak over his arm, he tells her that she can’t wear it anymore and will carry it for her. Octavia is okay with it and says that she’ll have to walk more carefully. This is because she’s still wearing her ball dress, so she walked more carefully.

When he sees Octavia in the dress, he chose for her, it gave him “a strange sense of jubilation:aww:. He reveals that a “subordinate’s” emotions were often influenced by their master to a certain extent, but he believed that this didn’t apply to him. Yet, he thinks that maybe because this second time (master?) was one he had chosen himself, he was somewhat affected, such when he was her dance practice partner. “When he had seen her happy smile, he had thought her delightful”. (I’m calling bull on the emotion’s influence thing. :blobpeek: He also said that a jyuu can’t lie to a shuu but he can easily lie. Of course, he said that it’s to a certain extent. Is it like feeling the master’s emotions?) Clifford knows that emotion of seeing her delightful was his own emotion, he couldn’t understand it.

Then Octavia asks him for his impression of her dress. :blobmelt: Clifford was confused and then was caught off guard by the surprise of her question, just like her order (to hide her if she cried). Octavia looked uneasy because she thought the dress didn’t suit her. To Clifford, Octavia was generally easy to read through the emotions on her face but sometimes she would say unexpected things that “it made it hard to get a handle on her. On her innermost thoughts, or on her intentions”. Clifford asked if she wanted his honest opinion and she says she did, so he tells her that he was surprised when she accepted the dress he chose. She asked if it would be better not to wear this dress, and he denies it, calling it a privilege and that there was no one else than her who would wear this dress so well. In fact, to him “words like ‘it suits you’ were insufficient:blobmelt::blobmelt::blobmelt::blobmelt:. She blushingly tells him that he’s complimenting her too much, to which he denies.

He then sees her surrounded by the Lishran flowers and then a thought came to him. He grabs one of the flowers and approached the defenseless Octavia who didn’t back away. He recalls her words from earlier when she said that she trusted him. He put the flower in her hair while smiling thinly, telling her that now it looks complete :blobnosebleed:. Octavia gently touches the flower. He then tells her that it’s said that the Lishran flower grows at purified plots of earth even in Ongarne, the furthest reaches of Hell, where only the Goddess of Death, Hell’s rule, can walk upon them. Octavia asks if he’s saying that they suit her, the one with the black fan (which already has some bad connotations). He asked if it displeased her and she answers that she has somewhat mixed feelings but prefers fresh flowers over jeweled hair ornaments. Her latter statement wasn’t addressed to Clifford apparently. Octavia was smiling faintly, recalling something nostalgic, most likely her time as Maki when her older sister used to put flowers in hair. Then she “cut off that feeling, she erased her smile and opened her black fan”. Her black fan’s fluffiness usually calms her down, so she most likely distressed by her past memory.

Clifford then wonders, monotonously, when Octavia went to the ball, “dressed just like the Goddess of Hell, she would be accompanied by the ‘Ongarn’s Envoy’. Those in the know would understand. How would they react at that time? The situation should start to move. On these people who were basking in an illusionary peace.” Lol, Clifford, are you trying to get a rise out of people? :blobowoevil_horns::blobowoevil_horns::blobowoevil_horns:

In volume 2, this takes place during the ball (it’s a semi-ball, but I just gonna call it a ball. Idk the difference tbh :blobconfused:), and when Derek and Octavia are dancing. Clifford, Rosa and Sill essentially have the same convo as in the manga, but there are some major spoilers, mostly from Clifford’s end.

Rosa says the dance is admirable and Sill asks why she wanted Octavia to do the opening dance. She unhesitatingly replies it’s because Octavia rarely attends these things, so Rosa was excited. Apparently, the reply “might not be her real reason, but it sounded sincere”. Rosa then talks to Clifford and “tried to draw him out” (so many people testing my baby Clifford ).

She tells him that if he touched the dice earlier, he would’ve danced with her instead. He says that the sky god didn’t choose him. Rosa asks if he thinks Derek is a suitable dance partner for her. Clifford knew the dice would deliberately not roll a three, despite a few rolls of the dice would eventually lead to a three. In his thoughts, people usually talked about asking the sky god, and anything intentionally done would be slid by stating that it was the sky god’s will. He also knew that he was never one of the choices to be her dance partner (but you can be her life partner! :blobok:). Answering Rosa’s question, he repeats that the sky god rejected him. He didn’t mind the words that he was rejected, I think. “It was far better than being liked”. Wow, he really hates the sky god (and that’s why he’s best boi!!! :aww:).

Rosa laughs and asks if Octavia forgave him if she chose him as her knight. Sil was confused and Rosa explains about the royal family is blessed by the sky god so defying the king is equivalent to defying the sky god. A few months after the former King Us was crowned, a noble led a failed rebellion. Sil didn’t know who that was (yo, how do you not know? :blobconfused: Weren’t you raised in Esphere and are dating the CP? Both Clifford and Octavia know, and Clifford is from Tahren). Clifford answers that it was the former Earl of Alderton. However, in his thoughts, he says “But when [the rebellion] came to being a failure or a success, it had been a success. The objective had been achieved” (and what was that? :blobfearful:). Anyways, Rosa goes on that Us took away his position, but his achievement allowed him to regain his family’s prestige, but they’ve been suppressed ever since then. They’re considered as being abandoned by the sky god, reflected through the lack of boys born to them (sigh, more sexism :blob_mask:), and the fact that no one from the Alderton family are chosen as escort knights to protect the royal family. She further says that King Enoch relied a lot on Earl Alderton, Clifford’s foster dad, in the recent war against the Sazah religion, but some stubborn nobles like herself were surprised by it.

Clifford says that he’s grateful to Octavia. Rosa then says that the Earl of Alderton, who was restrained from any position at the castle despite being active in Sazah war, “received a place to call his own” (likely because Clifford is the princess’s escort knight). She then asks if he was afraid of joining the earl’s family. He replies, “Afraid?” while his inner thoughts only stated “How ridiculous”. She explains that the Alderton family was abandoned by the sky god so people would be bothered it. He asks if she was bothered by it, to which she says she’s a timid person (hah! Rosa please :blobsmirk:).

He tells her that he didn’t know about the story as a commoner (ig by the fact that people are bothered by it, but, you see, Clifford has mastered the art of not giving a fuck :blobcat_knife:). Rosa tells him that he’s now come in contact with the aristocratic world, so he should be aware of it especially since he’s part of the topic. Clifford says harmless rumors are nothing to a commoner’s good luck in joining an earl’s family. Rosa says that the person being entrusted the princess’s black fan, it “might just be a little too convincing”. Then Sill interrupts and tells Rosa that if the sky god abandoned the Alderton’s family, it wouldn’t have survived till today, and tries to explain that not landing on three, thus on Clifford as Octavia’s dance partner, but failed or faltered through because he couldn’t find a reason.

Rosa gets kinda interested and asks him if he and Clifford are old acquaintances if he’s defending him. He denies it, saying that today was the first time they met but because he’s Octavia’s escort knight, he’s trustworthy. But he spoke falteringly. Clifford wondered if it was because what he really wanted to say that Clifford had saved his life before :blobfrowning:. He knew Sil doubted Clifford’s denial of him saving him four year ago.

The line “Was it a mistake to have let him see his face?” is interesting because it’s also present in the manga. Originally, I thought Sil said this, but now I’m wondering, were those Clifford’s thoughts? :hmm:

And now here’s the juicy part! Clifford was actually ordered by his first master to save Sil, which he did “apathetically”, but he never thought he would be involved with him again. His thoughts include “If it hadn’t been for that order──”. He then hears some guests murmuring if Derek will grasp glory from his dance with Octavia. When he saw Derek “exuding a friendly atmosphere towards Octavia”, his eyes narrowed (jealous Clifford confirmed :blobpats:).

Rosa then asks him what his wish was. Which number did he want for the dice during the roll. She asks “Did you hope to be her partner for the opening dance, Lord Alderton? Or maybe──” And that’s part 3.

So this happens when Clifford goes to change into his white suit at the ball. One of the maids asks if he needs help with changing, but he says no and tells her to help Octavia instead (politely. He wasn’t being rude). Maids were always ready at the venue for the royal family's guards.

When he confirmed that the maid left he “loosened his neck muscles, his movements rough” (ohhhhh! :blobnosebleed:I want an anime of thissss!!!!!:blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed:). To him, it was annoying. To him, social norms change according to the place, e.g., changing clothes just because they got a little wet in the aristocratic world. But, he wasn’t cynical about “the difference between this and the world he had lived in only short while earlier”. The latter is the Sazah battlefield. Because it was a battlefield, you had to be surrounded by dead corpses, blood and gore. Clifford’s clothes would be filthy with blood and trying to be clean would only wear him down on the battlefield. Then he says “being a fool would be preferable”, and I’m not sure what he means.

He says the appearance of objects could also change, like the building the ball was at. The building originally belonged to the former King Us, who clung to it but gave it to one of his vassals because he was near death. So the building became open to others, and people in power liked the building, But it was also the place where Us and the former Earl Alderton “who had played a key role in the events” committed regicide (killing Queen Idearia). But the memory was long-forgotten. Because no one remembered it, such a past didn’t exist (well, history is written by the winners). It’s similar with the truth.

Clifford notes that his white clothes are ornamental and aren’t fit for fitting, as it wouldn’t be white if it was. He couldn't believe that he, a ‘jyuu’, was being dressed in white and found it as a farce. It made him laugh dryly. To him “It was fine as long as he could move” (being battle-ready ig).

He then put his dagger in his cuffs and looked at his hand as he remembered the event earlier when Octavia was crying. “He felt shaken” and wondered why did that (comforting and stroking Octavia’s head). He wondered if it was because it was an order of hiding her if she ever cried. Although it was supposed to be an order, it sounded like a “game of make-believe” to him. He did do what she asked of him, but he didn’t think it was the best method because he “was influenced by the strange fluctuations in his heart from earlier” (Clifford!:blobmelt: You’re uncomfortable with her tears! :aww: Admit it! Accept it!).

Before she asked him to wait outside the room (ig when she ran away from Rust after seeing his face and ran to the room to calm herself), Octavia stepped back from him when he approached her. And he had found it unpleasant (OHMEGOSHHHH I CAN’T :blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed:). His translated thoughts include “Don’t run away” (AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! :blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed::blob_coughblood::blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed: I CAN’T!!!! THIS IS MY FAVORITE LINE!!!!!:bloblove: HELP MEEE!!!! IT’S TOO SWEEEETTTT!!!!! WHERE’S THE ANIME!!!???!!!??:blobcat_hyper:).

Although Octavia was feeling down, Clifford told himself that he didn’t need to look back. He would’ve just left and wouldn’t have seen her tears as she cried alone. He looked at his hand again and remembered her soft hair, and remembered her being “weak and helpless”. He acknowledges that him stroking her head what his own doing (Oh thank goodness you realize blobmelt_thumbs) but he didn’t know why (dammit Clifford:blob_pout:).

He remembers the first time he did it was when Octavia was having a bad nightmare in the carriage and he stroked her head until she had a peaceful sleep. He didn’t know the feeling within him when she had clung to his clothes. Octavia thought that was a dream, and it was fine for him that she thought that. He didn’t see the need to correct her, especially since he himself couldn’t understand. He told himself that it was just once and he set the boundary that he wouldn’t doing it again (jokes on you bby :blobxd:).

Butttt within a short time, he did it again! :blob_patpat:

Octavia told him that she’ll be bawling her eyes out as she clung to him. He thought that she wasn’t aware of what she was doing. She finally became aware and realized what she had done. She then looked at her own hand, like how Clifford was looking at his now. I think he was still stroking her head, which was looking down. He wondered if he did that because he “felt that it was wanted of him” as “Jyuus” fulfilled theory masters wishes, which was as natural as breathing to them. But “that had nothing to do with the ‘Jyuu’ called ‘Clifford’. Although he could pretend” (you don’t care as jyuu Cliffy, you care as a man! :blobnosebleed: Get ur gurl!). He then wondered if it was a bad influence from him having willfully chosen his mater (no! It’s the best thing you’ve done in your life! :bloblove:) He clenched his hand and the lingering feeling disappeared.

He finally enters the room Octavia was in. Octavia looked as if she never cried. She told him that it’s the first time seeing him in something other than his usual uniform and then asks for his opinion on her hair decorations before she goes back to the ball. Clifford thinks she probably means it was enough to conceal her tear-stained face (how big of a decoration are you gonna wear? :blobastonished:). He tells her there’s no problem. Octavia tells him he looks a little dissatisfied though. He compares the crying Octavia and the Octavia now without openings, which was her proper from. But his emotions told him “that the former was equally precious” as the latter (Awwwww~~~~:aww::aww::aww::aww::aww:). He still couldn’t find an answer to feelings.

Then a maid rushed forward with Lishrans. Another maid asked her to reconsider wearing the flowers. This is because high-ranking ladies don’t wear fresh flowers in their hair in public, especially not lishrans because of its connotations with poison and blooming in the furthest reaches of hell. Of course, Octavia doesn’t care. So the maid with the flowers gave them to Clifford and Octavia was confused until the maid explains, before apologizing, of a commoner’s legend of men placing flowers in a woman’s hair which is supposed to bring good luck. She then asks if Clifford will bring her good luck, to which he replies that it’ll be good if he could her luck (you being the strongest means you can defeat the royal family and the system for her:blobhero:).

Clifford approached Octavia with the flower in her hand and, this time she didn’t step back from (interesting how you observed that Clifford :blobthinkingsmirk:). He put the flower without touching her hair, and she comments that it smells nice. She then had the same nostalgic expression as she did in the garden when Clifford put the flower in her hair, likely reminiscing about her older sister again He noted that although “she was dressed like the Goddess of Death, she looked lonely”. I think he was about to reach a hand out to her but frowned, likely confused by his own feelings again.

Octavia then announced that she was going back to the ball with determination. She said that she would go to the banquet hall when Clifford asked which venue. He noticed that her complexion changed when she asked Rust to remove his mask. He wondered why she was so upset, as she, his master, “hadn’t made any clear mentions of it”. Octavia asks Clifford if he’ll go with her. Clifford thinks that he determination was resolute but she still said words like that. “Clifford, the escort knight, followed wherever Octavia, the princess, went. And also as a ‘subaltern’ to this girl who was his ‘liege’”. He thought that she didn’t need to ask when she already knew, but he still told her that won’t leave her unless she wants him to. She asks him to promise. A jyuu doesn’t lie to his master but “it was the truth. It was also a lie”. He promises to her with a nod, while hiding his inner thoughts.:blobmelt:

So, this happens in volume 3. This occurs after the battle with the enemies and Octavia is dozing off in Clifford’s arms. Clifford and Duke Leif Nightfellow have a chat.

Duke asks if she’s fallen asleep and his knights suggests carrying her instead. Clifford couldn’t leave Octavia to them, even if it made it “a little harder” to fight, so he rejected the offer. He “didn’t want to leave her with others:blobmelt::blobmelt::blobmelt:, and wondered if this emotion was from him as a “Jyuu”. Duke then said that, hypothetically, if they pointed their blades at him, he wouldn’t hold out for very long. Would he give her up then? More questions were asked, as if testing him (gotta test the son-in-law, am i right?:blobthinkingsmirk:). But Clifford knew they wouldn’t do that, because he could read his opponent’s intention to fight. This was another habit of his. From the Duke’s movements, breathing, and gaze, it showed he didn’t have a desire to fight. Duke replies it just hypothetical and he didn’t want to fight a losing battle.

He then says that when he investigated about ‘Clifford Alderton’, he would always choose what benefited him the most. Duke says that he doesn’t think that it’s a good idea for someone whose always fighting to have their hands occupied. Clifford knew the Duke was right, because “the him from back when he had been serving his previous ‘lord’ would probably have handed over Octavia, a burden needing carrying” (what!? :blobsleepless: Clifford, how could you!? :blobsob: Your love was supposed to bloom across time and space! You were my standard! :notlikeblob: Well, you’re still my standard.:blobmelt:). To Clifford, his priority was always being battle-ready at all times. He then tells the Duke that it’s not a problem as long as he wins (that’s the spirit! :blobowoevil:). The Duke replies that Clifford wouldn’t be trusted at Octaiva’s side if he didn’t have that much self-confidence at least.

Octavia then stirred a bit in Clifford’s arms, moving her face closer to Clifford, likely looking for a comfortable position or maybe wanting his warmth :blobthinkingsmirk:). Her face looked content, and Clifford realized that he felt slightly relieved because she didn’t look to be having nightmares like she did in the carriage scene. Duke then says that he himself wouldn’t be able to sleep peacefully near Clifford, but it’s different for the princess. He then asks Clifford if it was the same for him. Clifford voices out that he doesn’t understand, and he wouldn’t hurt Octavia. He then readjusts his hold on her, making sure she isn’t disturbed. But her arms slipped away from his neck and he saw her left bandaged hand that had a bit of blood on it.

Seeing that hand revived his anger. Duke then says that Octavia was still injured, and he sent his knights away. He and Clifford started walking through a cave. He tells Clifford that he allowed the princess to injure herself. While Octavia had given him orders, the Duke, as a royal subject, felt uneasy. He asked Clifford if he’ll follow the same order again in the future. For Clifford, as a “jyuu”, orders from his master were absolute, and “they transcended ethics, feelings or personal will” (so like Sebastian, but with the humanity :blobwoah:). When Octavia injured her hand, he understood his master’s intention. She forestalled him with the order so that he doesn’t stop her. He understood and chose to obey. BUT, before he knew it, he grabbed her wrist and remembered how Octavia was startled. Clifford was angry at the sight of her blood and couldn’t hold it back. He was angry at Octavia who injured herself so easily, and angry at himself who didn’t stop her even though it had happened right before him. He wondered if it was because he was a “Jyuu”, but his anger contradicted the orders he reached.

Clifford then tells the Duke that “there won’t be a next time.” Duke asks him if he’s saying that if Octavia injures herself after giving an order “she won’t have a single scratch?” to which Clifford says yes. And in his thoughts, he goes “for as long as he was by Octavia’s side” :blobnosebleed:.

The Duke then tells him that he personally doesn’t like him but he’s Octavia’s choice, so he hopes that Clifford can be someone she can be weak in front of. Clifford recalls the image of Octavia crying and had hid her as she had ordered him. Duke goes on that he doesn’t mean someone she can rant to, but to show genuine weakness in front of. He acknowledges that he can’t be that person because she sees right through him (You’re still a good dad :blob_plusone:, I mean uncle). He then says that no matter who Clifford is, Duke wanted to hear him say that there wouldn’t be a next time, and he also had other things he wanted to ask him.

Clifford remembered the Duke’s words to Octavia in the ‘Sky Room’ of no “Jyuu” could harm Nathaniel, the Sazah religion’s leader and wondered if there was one who could do the impossible. Duke asks Clifford why the “Jyuus” are after targeting Sil, to which Clifford retorts to go ask them that, as he had cold thoughts in his head which was “the very opposite of Octavia’s warmth in his arms” (Interestingly how you could sense her warmth, Clifford :blobthinkingsmirk::blobthinkingsmirk:). To Clifford, it was obvious why Sill was being targeted. Apparently, Sil’s “blood and the circumstances of his birth were problematic” and he was seen as a taboo existence.

Interestingly, “the memories inherited by the ‘Jyuus’ and engraved within them steered them towards rejecting him. And that trend was all the stronger among the ‘Jyuus’ who had been captured in the past. Those captured ‘Jyuus’ would never speak of it, however.”. I wonder what this line means. Memories are inherited? There’s still a lot of missing plot. :hmm:

Duke asks Clifford if he was “Jyuu”, would he also be after Sil. Clifford states that if he was “Jyuu”, he’d be targeted too. If Clifford’s background is revealed, he would also be chased by the ‘Jyuus’, just like Sil. He is also “a taboo existence which needed to be dealt with” (What kind of tragic past do you have, Clifford!? :blobsleepless: How much more must you suffer!? :blobsob:). But he won’t let it revealed, so he won’t be targeted. “Because the taboo child, born to the sound of his mother’s screams of despair, was officially stillborn” (Okay, so from my understanding, Clifford is “dead” to the Jyuu clan who believed he died in stillbirth. The rabbit hole just goes deeper and deeper :sweating_profusely:). Duke keeps Clifford’s word in mind.

Then Clifford asks the Duke a question if he was a “Jyuu”. The Duke asked if he took the joke with Octavia seriously, (that he was a jyuu) but Clifford said that it didn’t look like a joke. His impression of the Duke was that he could compete with the jyuus in the sky room. No matter how much he planned or the number of soldiers he had, there wasn’t a guarantee that you could beat the jyuus (ig because they’re really strong). If Octavia didn’t intervene, only the Duke’s knights would have entered the sky. “The immature ‘jyuu’ was disabled by taking his ‘lord hostage, but what about the other one?” So, I figured out this statement. The immature he talked about was Emilio, whose master was the young girl, Lilishana, who was accompanied by the Duke. The other jyuu he was talking about was the older jyuu who was basically the leader and sees masters as a calamity. So ig Clifford is thinking Emilio was forced to surrender because they had his master, but the leader seemingly didn't have one and hated masters, so how would be defeated by the Duke.

Anyways, Clifford wonders if a battle would have been avoided if that happened, but then he thinks that the only person would have defeated would most probably be the Duke himself. While it wouldn’t have been easy, Clifford does believe that the ‘jyuus’ would have been captured. Using Sil as bait was a success. Duke says that both Clifford and Octavia are overestimating him, and ask if that’s because both master and servant are alike, which is nice. In Clifford’s thoughts, jyuu members don’t have feature which identifies them as jyuu members. The best way to recognize them is through their strength. So if the Duke was a ‘jyuu’, then he has a natural talent. But then Clifford wondered if he studied under a ‘jyuu’.

Duke then tells Clifford that even if Clifford didn’t intervene, they still would have won, but there wasn’t a guarantee that Sil would be unharmed. And he wouldn’t have been able to find the crown. He found it troublesome that she had asked him to pass it on to the King (I know you can’t say no to your de facto daughter). However, Clifford knew the Duke was cheerful. Octavia gave the crown, found in Queen Idearia’s tomb, to the politically neutral Duke Leif Nightfellow to give it to the King. However, this could also be interpreted as her declaring that she wants to be queen and is requesting the Duke to be her supporter. The Duke’s high rank would lead to ideas of Octavia wanting to become queen.

Clifford and the Duke then smell the Lishran flowers (I think they’re coming to the end of the cave). The Duke asks if the lishran flower blooming were King Us’s obsession because he cultivated them strenuously. There’s a theory that he was planning to cover the entire area of this building with the lishran flowers, but no one knows the reason. The Duke thinks it’s probably because his sister, Idearia, loved these flowers. Thanks to Octavia, the Duke changed his perspectives of the flowers and “realized that a simpler way of thinking was better”. Duke thinks maybe Us didn’t even like lishran flowers, but they were lowers for the dead queen. Clifford looked down at Octavia’s hair. “The flowers once adorning it now decorated the Queen’s blue tomb”. They exited the cave and the royal family’s carriage had already arrived. The strong night wind made Octavia half open her eyes. While grasping his clothes, she sleepily asked if Clifford was there. He tells her that he’s here, and Octavia just smiles, as if relieved, before going back to sleep. In Clifford’s head, “The semi-ball was over. Now it was time to rest. So it should be fine for him to make a wish. ──May my ‘lord’s’ sleep be undisturbed” :bloblove:. He’s so precious.:bloblove:

I wonder if it relates to when Rosa asked his wish for the number of the dice to come up for Octavia’s dance partner at the ball, but he’s making that wish her, in secret, for her peaceful sleep rather than the number~~~.:aww:

The summary of his sixth POV is in this post.

So, in the P.O.V.s, Clifford basically goes like "I don't get my feelings, but I wanna be by her side all the time. She is so precious and I wanna protect her, but I don't know why. Must be a Jyuu-thing." :aww: :aww::aww::aww:

    AND

"I wanna protect her, but only because of my feelings as a "subordinate". I wanna make her happy, but only because of my feelings as a "subordinate". I wanna kill anyone who makes her cry, but only because of my feelings as a "subordinate". I want her to love me, but only because of my feelings as a "subordinate". I wanna marry her, but only because of my feelings as a "subordinate". I wanna have the bebez with her, but only because of my feelings as a "subordinate". I wanna protecc my waifu and bebez from anyone trying to steal said waifu and bebez , but only because of my feelings as a "subordinate". " :blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed:

    Ah~~~~ I'm drowning in delusion~~

The following is simply my opinion. :blobpeek:

So, in the "The world seen by the messenger of Ongarne" (オンガルヌの使者』が見る世界), I want to look at Clifford’s use of pronouns of other people, and what he calls them. And by that, I mean the names he calls them. I can’t identify the pronouns apart from the highly limited knowledge of Japanese pronouns, such omae, kimi, kisama, anata.

Before that, I’ve already said it before briefly that while "The world seen by the messenger of Ongarne" (オンガルヌの使者』が見る世界) is essentially Clifford’s P.O.V. which reveals his thoughts, opinions and feelings, it's in third person.

    For example:

But Derek Nightfellow particularly was exuding a friendly atmosphere towards Octavia. Clifford’s eyes narrowed slightly.
のほうが砕けた雰囲気でオクタヴィアに接している。わずかに、クリフォードは目を細めた(Tokuni Dereku naitoferō no hō ga kudaketa fun'iki de okutavu~ia ni sesshite iru. Wazuka ni, kurifōdo wa me o hosometa.)

This line suggests three points made overall in this reflection (I feel like I’m writing a paper fml )

    1) Clifford’s indifference to others --> Derek Nightfellow (Full name à distance)

    2) Clifford’s focus on Octavia --> Octavia (First name à closeness)

    3) Clifford’s deindividualization of himself --> Clifford’s eyes (not “my” eyes)

Despite this being his P.O.V., Clifford does not use the “I”, “Me” & “My” pronouns. This is in contrast with other P.O.V.’s including Octavia, Alexis, Sill & Guy. These four characters use the “I”, “Me” & “My” pronouns in their P.O.V.s. So, while it can be argued that the statements I make below are said in a general third P.O.V., I don’t believe that that’s the case since this side story is centered around Clifford. It is a reflection of him. The main point of Clifford’s lack of the usage of the “I”, “Me” & “My” pronouns sort of deindividualizes and dehumanizes him. He has goals, opinions and reflections, but he’s constantly questioning his confusion of the feelings he has in relation of Octavia. To me, this is a piece of evidence of Clifford dehumanizing himself and sees him as a battle machine as he himself has said he used to care about being battle-ready and being able to move (to fight).

However, there are some lines where “jibun”, one of the Japanese pronouns of the self, is used.
So, it should be fine for himself to make a wish だから、自分が願っても良いだろう (dakara, jibun ga negatto te mo yoi darou yo)

However, Jibun gives an idea of myself, “oneself or personal self, but which is also used to give an idea to another person. The word 自分 it is similar to the English word “self”, and is used to accentuate self. Most of the time it is used to refer to "yourself", but it is used to refer to other people.” (see.)

    Now then:

    Duke Leif Nightfellow

Each movement, breathing, and gaze-all denied the fighting spirit of Leif Nightfellow.
動作の一つ一つ、呼吸、目線──どれもが、レイフ・ナイトフェローの戦意を否定していた。(Dōsa no hitotsuhitotsu, kokyū, mesen ─ ─ dore mo ga, reifu naitoferō no sen'i o hitei shite ita.)

The easiest way to recognise them was through their strength. ──If he wasn’t a ‘subordinate, then the duke was a man with natural talent.
もっともわかりやすいのは強さだが──それこそ、『従』でないのならば、公爵こそ天賦の才を持った人間ということになる。Mottomo wakari yasui no wa tsuyo-sadaga ─ ─ sore koso,“ jyuu” Denai nonaraba, kōshaku koso tenpunosai o motta ningen to iu koto ni naru.)

Pretty clear cut. Clifford calls the Duke either Leif Nightfellow or Duke in his inner thoughts. There is a clear recognition of formality, which, to me, is a sign of Clifford’s indifference. On the other hand, for the Duke, there may be a slight form of respect as the Duke gives of an aura of strength for Clifford to believe that Jyuus in the Sky Room would have been defeated even without Clifford there. However, this is an assumption, since their conversation was pretty cold from Clifford’s side. Though, Clifford was not rude in his inner thoughts regarding the Duke. But, the feeling of indifference is there.

    Countess/Earl Rosa Redington

“── It wouldn’t be the decision of the Countess.”
──女伯爵の決定ではなく。(─ ─ Onna hakushaku no ketteide wa naku.)

Rosa Redington opened her mouth as she stared at the two dancing.
踊る二人を見つめながら、ローザ・レディントンが口を開いた。(Odoru futari o mitsumenagara, rōza redinton ga kuchi o aita.)

Rosa is called as Countess (Onna - Woman, Hakushaku - Earl) or Rosa Redington in Clifford’s inner thoughts, much like the Duke, as stated above. The feeling of indifference is clear from the formality in his head.

    Sil Burks

However, when he called out to her, she turned her face towards Sil Burks.
だが、呼びかけられ、シル・バークスへと顔を向けた。(Daga, yobikake rare, Shiru bākusu e to kao o muketa.)

Either way, the strategy of using Burks as a decoy would have been a success.
バークスを囮にする作戦は、どちらにせよ成功していたはずだ。(Bākusu o otori ni suru sakusen wa, dochira ni seyo seikō shite ita hazuda.)

Clifford calls Sil as Sil Burks or just Burks in his inner thoughts. Using his full name and last names gives a sense of indifference and distance. This is sensible since Clifford is pretty cold and distant to Sil. Even when he was ordered to save Sil four years ago, he did so “apathetically”, and had coldly apologized to Sil after he lied to him that he didn’t save him.

In contrast, Clifford calls both Rosa and the Duke by just their titles apart from their full names. He hasn’t called either of them with their last names in his inner thoughts. It makes me wonder; why? I think that it further reflects Clifford’s indifference to Sil, apart from his thoughts about him.

    Derek Nightfellow

Octavia and Derek Nightfellow started moving along with the tune.
曲に合わせ、オクタヴィアとデレク・ナイトフェローが動き出した。(Kyoku ni awase, okutavu~ia to Dereku naitoferō ga ugokidashita.)

Clifford has called Derek thrice, and only calls him Derek Nightfellow in his inner thoughts. Once again, this shows distance and indifference. The lack of Derek, to me, shows the lack of relevance Derek is to him for now. :blobrofl:

    Head lady-in-waiting - Mathilda

The head lady-in-waiting supported Octavia more than any other member of the royal family. She wouldn’t get angry.

あの女官長はどの王族よりオクタヴィアに肩入れしている。怒りはしないだろう。(Ano jokan-chō wa dono ōzoku yori okutavu~ia ni kataire shite iru. Ikari wa shinaidarou.)

The head lady-in-waiting, Mathilda, is a bit interesting. She’s been mentioned four time in Clifford’s inner thoughts, only as the head lady-in-waiting (女官長 Jokan-cho à (if you’ve watched a lot of anime, think of kaichou (school president), iinchou (class president), heichou (captain (Levi)), fukucho (vice chief), shachou (company president), buchou (department chief)). When Octavia says that Mathilda is scary when angry, Clifford thinks that the head lady-in-waiting cares more about Octavia than the royal family does. So, while there is certainly distance, Clifford keeps a professional relationship with Mathilda. I would even say that is a positive professional relationship as Clifford says a nice thing about her regarding Octavia.

    Enoch

However, it was only three months ago that Enoch began to lock Octavia in this gorgeous prison at night.
しかし、イーノックが、オクタヴィアを夜の間、この華美な牢獄に閉じ込めるようになったのは、三カ月前からだ。 (Shikashi, īnokku ga, okutavu~ia o yoru no ma, kono kabina rōgoku ni tojikomeru yō ni natta no wa, san-kagetsu mae karada.)

As soon as Octavia had chosen him as her escort knight, he remembered the question that King Enoch had personally flung at him.
オクタヴィアが、よりにもよって自分を護衛の騎士として選んですぐ、国王イーノック自らによって投げかけられた問いが脳に甦った. (Okutavu~ia ga, yori ni mo yotte jibun o goei no kishi to shite erande sugu, kokuō īnokku mizukara ni yotte nagekake rareta toi ga nō ni yomigaetta)

In the rare times he has mentioned Enoch in his inner thoughts, he goes between Enoch and King Enoch (国王イーノック Kokuō īnokku --> 国王 (Kokuō) means king), which is interesting in its own way. Apart from the convo he had with Matilda, the head lady-in-waiting, when he had to refer to him as King Enoch, he refers to him as a king twice. However, the first time is an introduction to what Enoch is. So, in the four times ‘Enoch’ has been mentioned among Clifford’s P.O.V.s, Clifford has only called him King Enoch once in his head. Clifford would definitely strained relationship with Enoch, and vice versa. Of course, using just his name shows informality and disrespect. At the same, I think his usage of Enoch as king can be seen as him also maintaining distance. But, Enoch has been mentioned quite rarely, despite him having a small scene for their convo with Clifford. I suppose that itself speaks in volumes of Clifford's attitude towards the king.

    Alexis

Clifford fended off the icy gaze that Alexis had certainly never once directed towards Octavia.

オクタヴィアには決して向けたことのないだろう、アレクシスの凍え切った視線をクリフォードは受け流した。 (Okutavu~ia ni wa kesshite muketa koto no naidarou, arekushisu no kogoe kitta shisen o kurifōdo wa ukenagashita.)

The second prince of Esphere is on good terms with his sister.

エスフィア国の第二王子は、姉姫と仲が良い。(Esufia-koku no dainiōji wa, ane hime to nakagaii.)

Clifford calls Alexis as mostly "Alexis" in his inner thoughts. He calls him the Second prince (第二王子 Dai ni ōji) 4 times in his inner thoughts. However, it’s the name Alexis that is mostly used. The fact that he’s not using Alex’s prince title can show disrespect, which I think is true. While Clifford is also pretty indifferent to Alexis just as he is with a lot of other people, apart from Octavia, the fact he uses just “Alexis” does make me wonder if he knows Alexis genuinely cares about Octavia. Clifford has said that the royal family doesn’t care about Octavia, but he acknowledges that Alexis is on good terms with her and would never look coldly at her. But that’s just an assumption. He is also overall indifferent to Alexis, and is actually unafraid of Alexis that he uses his first name only, albeit in his head.

    Octavia

    "──Leave Octavia to them?"
    ──オクタヴィアを預ける? (─ ─ Okutavu~ia o azukeru?)

I have saved the best for last! :bloblove:

So, obviously, Octavia is the name that is mostly reoccurring among Clifford’s third-person P.O.V.’s. However, she is mostly referred to as simply “Octavia”. This is pretty informal, but it’s not associated with disrespect but rather a closeness. Taking an example from my own experience, I have a parent with whom I use informal pronouns, but they’re my parent and obviously, I’m not being disrespectful nor rude. What I have with them is closeness, as one would have with a parent/s. Of course, I’m not saying that you can’t be close and use formal pronouns, but it differs per culture and person.

The very line I chose for this part of the analysis "──Leave Octavia to them?" shows his closeness, worry, and protectiveness toward her. I'm not sure if this is something that Clifford says in his head, like a first-person thought, or a general third-person thought in his head.

When Octavia is referred to in Clifford’s thoughts, she’s referred to in positivity. His observations and reflections of her are positive, kind, and even affectionate. So, his informality of simply referring to her as “Octavia” can’t make sense if he’s being disrespectful or rude to her. Rather his care and affection for her reflect his closeness with her.

Clifford’s third-person P.O.V.’s take place just after he chose to become Octavia’s subordinate, so I don’t know how he would have referred to her in his head before that bond.

It can also be argued that he sees Octavia as “Octavia”, apart from seeing her as Octavia the first princess & Octavia his “lord”. This is represented by the fact when he said to himself that both the proper form of Octavia as the princess and the crying Octavia were equally precious. He sees Octavia holistically and is trying to understand her still. For example, he thinks Octavia may have some things that she hides (her trauma) and that she likes things that commoners mostly like, such as decorating her hair with fresh flowers. And he has never stopped her from that. Even when she asks for his opinion like if it’s okay to go and walk in the garden, he tells her that he’s okay with it as long as she’s okay with it.

Overall, this just reinforces my standard in Clifford who is not rude even in his head to the people who are giving him insults. :blobReach:

Also, apart from Octavia, he doesn’t have any good or bad feelings about any of the other characters mentioned above. This again shows how Octavia matters to him the most. :bloblove:

So there's a bonus story called "The Overflowingly Ambitious Commoner Soldier’s Encounter in the Library──A Glimpse of the Future? ─" :aww::aww::aww::aww::aww::aww::aww::aww: Credit to @renuac :blobtaco:

The story is told from Guy's P.O.V. Judging from the conversation in the story, the story apparently takes place after Rosa's ball and AFTER Clifford is released. :blobtaco:My baby is free in this story! :blobtaco:

So Guy was in the royal library because soldiers had classroom lectures, but books were expensive so he went to the library to borrow a book. Reading is important for soldiers, and Guy, as a commoner, wasn't good at reading and writing. People would also sometimes come to the library to chat, but speaking loudly wasn't allowed.

You need special permission to enter the library, and Guy just got it. He was kinda overwhelmed by the thick books and difficult words. So, essentially, Guy was a beginner. As he was looking for a short and easy-to-understand book, one of his commoner soldier friends (imma call him C.S. for commoner soldier) asked him if he still hadn't chosen a book. Guy parroted the question to him, and C.S. found a book called "The Legend of King Usu・ Abridged". It's a children's book, so it was perfect for Guy.

    BUT THEN

Octavia, Clifford, and her maid Sasha enter the library. Octavia and Sasha are talking, with Octavia telling how coming to the library with Sasha reminds her of the day she met Sasha in the library. It's an embarrassing story for Sasha, and pleads with Octavia to forget that day.

Guy and C.S. hide behind the bookshelf, and both ask each other why the other is hiding, to which they both reply it was a reflex lol. To Guy and C.S., the presence of Octavia means the presence of Clifford, aka Ongarne. They saw that Clifford glanced at them, and kinda panicked lol. Octavia then asked Clifford what was wrong, to which he replied that there were some people acting unnaturally. Guy knew it was them. Octavia asked if Clifford was joking that people were behaving unnaturally in the library. Guy, in his head, is like, no Princess you have the wrong idea :blobrofl:. (I wonder if Octavia thought that there were some guys doing the nasty in the library.:hmm: Esphere has a lot of PDA among gay guys). Clifford assures her that they're not suspicious so they're not dangerous. Guy and C.S. felt relieved. Guy wonders if they shouldn't have hidden, as he felt his lifespan get shorter (Clifford isn't going to kill you unless you hurt Octavia :blobpopcorn_two:). Guy decided that things have already become like this so he's gonna be like air until Octavia leaves.

Guy noticed that the other people in the library weren't surprised by Octavia's presence, because Octavia has been coming to the library regularly since she was a kid (so our girl is pretty scholarly too, especially since, from her convo with Rust, she checks for authenticity of sources and analysis of sources). Octavia goes alone to find a book. Guy's heard before that, as long as she stays within her knight's eyesight, Octavia prefers moving alone (Is this just with Clifford since he is genuinely overprotective of her, and, not to mention, this takes place after the ball and prison release, so he would've kept in mind of Octavia's injured hand and wants to avoid that again? :hmm: :hmm: ) Guy is impressed with Octavia's engagement with reading.

AND THEN he overhears the convo between Sasha and Clifford :blobpopcorn::blobpopcorn::blobpopcorn::blobpopcorn::blobpopcorn::blobpopcorn::blobpopcorn::blobpopcorn::blobpopcorn::blobpopcorn::blobpopcorn:

Sasha just BLUNTLY asks Clifford if he likes women or men (Sasha is my spirit animal :blobrofl::blobrofl::blobrofl:). Clifford just goes silent. Guy nearly burst out laughing and wonders, if Clifford's silence came from his confusion. Guy thinks that Sasha is truly amazing (yeah, she is! :blobrofl:) Sasha explains that there's actually a "groundless" (her emphasis, not mine :blobrofl:) rumor going around among the maids. Clifford asks what kind of rumor. Guy himself wonders if the rumor is about Clifford being Ongarne. Sasha says the rumor is about Clifford having a rendezvous with a woman while he was escorting Octavia to the ball. And Guy is like wait, it's a love story!? C.S. was coughing. I think they were both trying to hold back their laughter (lol everyone's teasing Clifford:blob_plusone:, but no bully:blobnobully:). C.S. bets that the rendezvous was only with Octavia. Guy then imagined Octavia and Clifford's secret rendezvous at the ball but stopped (Mind letting me in your head, Guy? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) I also want to see the secret rendezvous ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) I want this bonus to appear in the manga, with the image of Octavia and Clifford's imagined secret rendezvous!!!:blobphone: Oh God, this manga is going lewd:blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed::blobnosebleed:). Guy wonders if there even was a secret rendezvous (there will be one..... there will be...). He waited for Clifford's answer, but the answer didn't come, because Octavia answered Sasha that it was just a pointless rumor, and Clifford never once abandoned his duties during the ball.

(So, I think I get how the rumors rose. If you remember, Octavia was crying in a private room, and Clifford came in. Because the room's door was slightly open when Clifford entered, two gay guys were looking for a private room to have their own secret rendezvous (apparently, at balls, secret rendezvouses happen A LOT). They entered the room but saw Clifford in the room which was also dark. His back was to them. If you connect the dots, private room, in the dark, his back to them, they would assume that Clifford was having a secret rendezvous (oh I wish :blobmelt:). I wonder if they saw Octavia's skirt from beneath since, well, it's a dress, it's poofy. Looking at the manga images, I could definitely see her skirt. I mean, why else would the rumor be that Clifford had a secret rendezvous with a woman when male homosexuality is the norm in Esphere. Instead, there would've been a rumor that he had secret rendezvous with a man. So... C.S. isn't half wrong since Octavia was in the private room with Clifford :blobrofl:.

I'm even more impressed with Clifford :aww:. He didn't clarify the rumor, because if he did, he would have put Octavia under the spotlight of some bad rumors. And if he tried to clarify that, he would've had to tell them that Octavia was crying and he was simply consoling her. Not only would that contradict his orders of hiding Octavia if she ever cried, but also he personally (no matter how much he denies it) wouldn't want her to go through that. Instead, his silence would've been a yes to the rumors. He'd rather disgrace himself than let Octavia be disgraced by the rumors. I mean, he's already known as the commoner who's part of the infamous Alderton family, as Ongarne who killed people from sides of the Sazah war, and as the lowest ranking knight. What's another to him? Plus, Clifford isn't the type to care. But we all know just how super ultra great delicious wonderful he is:aww:. I wonder if Octavia knew that too and interjected in time for him. Yes, Octavia. Get ur man. Protecc ur man. :bloblove:)

Sasha apologizes to Clifford and says that, while the rumor is pretty disgraceful, she and the maids were pretty excited "because the person he met was a woman. Just the fact that it wasn’t a tryst between gentlemen gives us maids’ hope!" (Sasha, I love you, but you better not mean that Clifford is on the market :blobpopcorn_two: Clifford belongs to Octavia butiwishhewereminedammitwhyyyyiissad). Guy acknowledges that most of the trysts around here are between men and C.S. also acknowledges sometimes they see the maids at the castle with dead fish eyes. Then they both agree that they're the same (ig they're also pretty bummed out at the homosexual PDA because they're straight).

Sasha again apologized to Clifford, saying that while it’s true that she did have hope, she was more worried that Clifford abandoned his duty of protecting Octavia even if it was for a moment. Octavia looked sympathetically at her (the maids know about Octavia's pasts unreliable knights). Guy also felt fuzzy but then C.S. butt in with the question of whether Clifford liked women or men. Guy wondered that too, or if he swung both ways. Guy then answered that isn't it women. His basis is that he hadn't heard any stories of Clifford sexually assaulting men or women during the Sazah war, even though it would have been easy for him (Just what do you take him for!? :blobfearful: Clifford would never do something that barbaric! :blobfearful:)

Sasha then asks Octavia about which bookcase is it (ig for the book she was looking for). Octavia explains that she looked at some shelves, but feels like it's gonna take some time. She was looking for a history book, so she was going to check the shelves about the history of the kingdom. Guy deduces that Octavia came to the library to look up something u and brought her maid as an extra pair of hands. Guy and C.S., however, were both by the history of the kingdom section. They tried to move away. Guy felt like Clifford was watching them as they moved, but wondered if that was his imagination (It's not :blobxd:). But, to Guy, whether it was an imagination or not, as long as they were judged harmless to Octavia (by Clifford), then they're fine (Anyone getting a-lion-protecting-a-domestic-cat vibe from Clifford? Just me?).

Eventually, the two are caught. Octavia recognizes them and they see Clifford behind her (again, he won't bite!:blobpopcorn_two: he's tamed:blobpopcorn:) Octavia noticed the book "The Legend of King Usu・ Abridged" in Guy's hand. She says that she's borrowed it before and then decided to read the full version. Guy felt that the sparkle in her eyes was saying that she was so happy to have a friend. But Guy didn't want to be that person. Octavia took the book and nostalgically saw her name on the form in the book. The form was to record who borrowed the book, so the borrowers had to write their names on it. Octavia's name was written down on the form many times. Her writing changed as she got older on the form. Even though Octavia was royalty, she still diligently filled out the form. Guy noticed that when she was little, her writing was pretty bad (Well, she was a kid. Kids don't have nice handwriting. I didn't. Cut her some slack :blobpopcorn_two:). Guy thought handwriting would've been beautiful even back then, but it looked a lot like Guy's handwriting, who had only just learned to read and write. But, Guy feels a sense of closeness with her over this as he tried to stop the feeling (I mean, aren't you Alexis's knight? And Alexis is super close with Octavia. So you're gonna be seeing her either way, buddy.). In the last ten years or so, Octavia was the only person who had borrowed the book. This made Guy wonder if it was a forbidden book or something (She's not a witch! :blobfearful::facepalm:) C.S. made an expression to Guy as if saying if he messed up (Ig by picking up the same book Octavia preferred. Now you guys are just bullying her:blobnobully:). Guy, in his head, says he'll be sure to collect his bones. Octavia recommends the book because it's easy to understand and enjoyable read. C.S. takes back the book when he returns it to him.

Octavia then asked Guy if he was also going to borrow a book, which caught Guy off guard. He said that he was going to borrow one and, in this panic, grabbed a random thin book from a nearby shelf. Octavia was silent and Guy wondered what kind of a book he had picked up. While his friend was shaking his head, Guy saw that the book he had grabbed was "How to Raise a Gentle Lev Bird" :blobrofl: Guy was panicking and wondering who would write this, since the author is unknown, since "no normal guy would even think of writing a book about raising Lev birds, said to be the very familiars of Hell" Octavia thinks he's interested in Lev birds,, and Guy saw Octavia's ‘Black Fan’ made of Lev feathers. He couldn't refute her words (she's the princess lol) and answered with a strained smile that he was indeed thinking of trying to raise a Lev bird.

So Guy reads the Lev-rasing book and found it kind of interesting. Now, whenever he sees Lev birds flying, he thinks of that book. He says that he not going to raise Lev birds, but then, in the end, says he won't... probably. (This is a nice parallel, since, in his other P.O.V. where he talks to Clifford, he was scared of Lev Birds because they are seen as bad luck).

Apparently, there's also another bonus story in the series, but, unfortunately, I don't know the title. :blobsob::blobsob::blobsob::blobsob::blobsob::blobsob::blobsob:

If anyone has it, PLEASE share it with me :blobsob::blobsob::blobsob::blobsob:

That and the 4p leaflet of the manga! CLIFFORDDDDD!!!:blobsob::blobsob::blobsob:

So, visually, I noticed some things in the manga, and I just have to talk about :aww::aww::aww::aww:

The manga image below is when Octavia is crying while Clifford is holding her. While she's recalling her traumatic memory and her worries (not to him, though), you can see his hands are on her stomach. In the panel below the image, where the jerk god is holding what seems to be the royal castle, implying his control over the castle, you can see Clifford's hands. It's quite a contrast. The image of the jerk god is large, while Clifford's hands are small and may even be missed by the reader's eyes. But, personally, I feel like this implies that the trauma jerk god made her go through is huge but Clifford's hold on her is a subtle connotation of his steady and definite support for her. His hold is both silent and firm as seen from him just quietly staring at her while his hands are placed over each other. It's like he's telling her that he's here.

I've also noticed that, at the semi-ball (ONLY), most of the male characters wear their tie/cravat in a style called mailcoach tie or waterfall or Jabot. This includes Sil, Derek, Duke, Rust (he also has a ribbon-like bolo tie (I assume) over his cravat), the red-haired-youth, and even the Kangina merchant Sil talked with briefly. Clifford, for his ball suit, wore a standard tie, that looks more like a wedding tie. So far, in terms of major characters, CP Douche and sus King have also worn this style of tie (outside the ball). I feel like this style of Clifford's tie ties in with him as the ML (pun intended) of the series, since CP Douche was the ML of the original "King of Nobility" novel. Of course, this is just within the context of the ball, since the other characters do wear different styles of tie/cravat on different occasions, so it's not like there's a specific and permanent tie/cravat style that they have. It may not mean anything :cookie: .

You know why else Clifford is amazing and CP is a douche? CP's overprotectiveness for his lover is basically him controlling his movement, and he doesn't even listen to him. He kinda isolates Sil unless it's with his own people, particularly Derek who's a friend to both of them. Sil's never even properly interacted with Octavia until the carriage scene.

BUT Clifford's protectiveness over Octavia is gentle. He always asks for her permission and never does anything she doesn't like. While he does keep her in his line of sight at all times, he's very subtle about it in a way that it isn't domineering or controlling her movement. Anddddd he always listens to her. :bloblove: I stan attentive and gentle bois.

ALSO, although the story is faaaaar from over, what I additionally like about Clifford is that he has never grabbed her or stopped her forcefully, particularly grabbing her wrist. Like, seriously! I have read so many stories where the ML grabs the FL's wrist to stop her from going away or pulling her away. And almost always the ML grabs the FL's hand that it hurts and then the guy apologizes. I'm sorry, but that feels like a red flag in a guy to me. Like, what is up with this trope? Clifford, though he's an escort knight so he isn't exactly allowed to do that (though I'm pretty sure there are stories where status doesn't stop knights from doing that), would never do that. He has only grabbed her wrist when she cut her hand in order to stop her. In the story, Hugh (pain-in-the-ass) grabbed her arm to stop her from going to Clifford at the training ground. Similarly, at the beginning of the story, Octavia goes to the training ground for Alex, and Clifford simply tells her, without disrupting her convo with Alex, to kindly keep her distance from the grounds as the soldiers were training (so she might get hurt).

In fact, Clifford asks for her permission to hold her hand (for escort purposes or solidifying the "shirushi" bond). In the manga, at the ball, after Octavia tells Clifford that Derek is alright but attack him if he does anything sus, Clifford puts his hand out and waits for her to hold it (again, to escort her). In the novel, additionally, he asked to touch Octavia's hand the very first time he decided to make her his master. It was so sweet, and I don't know why it wasn't in the manga.

So, looking at a better translation of the novel, here are some interesting facts about King Us’s narration in Alex's nightmare sequence.

    - The former Queen Idearia had silver hair like Octavia’s but had green eyes
    - She tells Us (as Alex) that he did well, after Us/Alex killed her.
    - The former Count Alderton, who congratulated Us on becoming king, was dyed in red because he killed a lot of people
    - Alderton, after Us refuses to be king, asked him if he intended to reject his sister’s wish
    - The former Queen Idearia dearly loved her kingdom and its people
    - Us, however, was “a shunned prince” (much like Alex as an illegitimate child) so he didn’t love Esphere at all, but only cared about his sister.
    - He loved to read books and would often shut himself away in the castle library. His habit would often have him forgetting to eat or sleep, which would make his sister, Idearia, really mad. (Interestingly, in the manga, Idearia is seen smiling while Us is reading as if they’re talking, which implies that it was a fond memory for him.)
    - Because he read a lot of books, he developed “an empty dream”, that people could just talk out their problems and compromise and try to understand each other through it. In other words, Us is a pacifist.
    - Us hated fighting and bloodshed.
    - That’s why he hated Idearia’s “Jyuu” (see) because “Jyuus” fought (since they’re a warrior clan). (This confirms that she did have a "Jyuu").
    - Us wanted to step down as a prince to the rank of vassal to support his sister, Idearia
    - Initially, the people cheered for Idearia’s coronation, and the ones who used to praise her turned their backs on her, showing that they opposed her.
    - But then the sky god sent natural disasters were Heavenly Father’s wrath.
    - It was believed that it was because of the queen (and queens are pretty rare in the history of Esphere), and the disasters would stop if the Queen was gone.
    - “When [this] kind of incitement” spread, the people rebelled, not knowing that Idearia dearly loved them as a leader.
    - Because of this, he hated the people because “No matter how much love you lavished on a fool, they were still just a fool. Never even noticing their own stupidity. You couldn’t hope for discussion with easily manipulated fools”.
    - He wanted to destroy Esphere and its people for turning against his sister and forcing him to kill her

    Additionally:
In Alex's dreams, during Esphere's war with Kangina (another country), Tarhen was where many fierce battles took place. Esphere and Kangina decided on a ceasefire but "without ever being able to settle things once and for all" (and that was??). Us, in Alex's dreams, wasn't fighting Kangina for Espere, it was "for the sake of killing his sister’s ‘Jyuu’" (Okay, but why!? :blobfearful:)

Though I've fixed it in my other posts, I want to clarify something. So Guy, basically the comic relief :blobpopcorn_cool:, has a colleague whom I kept naming Stain, which is false. The colleague, who is also a commoner, is unnamed. And I'm pretty sure this is the same guy who's in the bonus story "The Overflowingly Ambitious Commoner Soldier’s Encounter in the Library──A Glimpse of the Future? ─".

Stain is actually the red-haired youth who is Duke Nightfellow's spy for the battle in the sky room with Jyuus vs Clifford (and the others but I always only see Clifford). So let me clarify as well as some other characters since the translation of the novel is ffffffaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrr away (I think it's been abandoned).

The guy with dark hair, who's talking to Alexis, is Guy.

Guy's colleague, an unnamed commoner soldier, who is talking with Guy in the manga image below. He was with Guy in the Sazah war, so, he knows that Clifford is Ongarne.

    https://kumacdn.club/wp-content/uploads/I/Im An Opportunistic Princess In-Charge of Solving Things/Chapter 01.3/001.jpg

The red-haired youth with the mask, who's talking to Sil, is Stain, revealed in another one of Guy's P.O.V. called "The possibly peaceful holiday of the commoner soldier who can’t stop reading things too deeply again".

    He's friends with Guy.

    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FMaz_5gaAAUwf-g?format=jpg&name=large

The black-haired maid who's talking is Mathilda.

    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FAB9nC4VQAU2EHC?format=jpg&name=large

The light-haired guy with a side braid and protecting Sil from the other Jyuu is Emilio. His "lord" (Shuu) is apparently a young blind girl from Tarhen, named Lilishana (the one who talked with Sill at the ball before he was taken away by the red-haired Stain). To Lilishana, she's her family servant, when he's actually her "Jyuu".

A young blind girl from Tarhen. She's Emilio's "lord" (Shuu) but doesn't know that and thinks he's her family servant. She is described as having silver hair and green eyes.

I want to make some clarification. So Celius-ly a douchebag isn't the Crown Prince. There isn't any announcement of a crown prince. But people assume that he's the one who's gonna be king.

Here's another interesting fact. Octavia has a diary she wrote in Japanese so that no one can decipher it and because she wanted to keep her native tongue. Esphian language and Japanese are different. She had great difficulty in learning a new language, so she used to just say yes, no, or please speak more slowly and repeat, so she was a generally quiet princess as a kid. She would sometimes accidentally slip out Japanese words, which Duke Nightfellow would think were "mysterious magic words", which he is also missed (he was being the loving Uncle to her). She also only taught Japanese to Alexis, who quickly learned it.

As a 'Jyuu', Clifford says that he has to obey his master, which is Octavia in this case. But, I wonder, just like lying, if Clifford is bound to obey or something he learned as a 'Jyuu' :hmm: . Octavia gave first him the order, as his master, to hide her from everyone if she ever cried, which he does at the ball. But, at the same time, in the private room at the ball, she orders him to stand outside the room so that he doesn't her cry, and he does that almost. What I mean by that, in Clifford's P.O.V., he had a hunch of her shaken emotions but tried, and I do mean tried, to ignore it. He was gonna leave, like she ordered him, and told himself that it's not his problem and he doesn't need to turn back. But he did and thus stayed in the room and fulfilled his first order. So this makes me think that there's some flexibility when it comes to obeying orders.

Take the young 'Jyuu', Emilio, in the Sky Room, for example. He already has a master, Lilishana, who is blind. I was surprised that he left her side (and alone, like wtf Emilio, she's young and blind) and joined the other 'Jyuus'. And the other older 'Jyuu', the leader, called a master a calamity, and Clifford himself tried to avoid a master after his first one. He even initially said for now after he decided to protect Octavia as his master (he'll stay with her forever, I promise you! :blobcat_hyper: ), which makes me wonder if it's easy or possible to leave a 'Shuu'.

So I think things like what a 'Jyuu' should be and should do are basically learned things. It's not going to kill them, as far as I know, if they disobey (or leave their master, I think) just like if they lie. I do wonder, though, how Clifford learned these things because I have a feeling he didn't grow up among them.

It also makes me wonder more about the 'Jyuu' clan; their tenets and their rituals.

Just wanted to add that the former Queen Idealia, was one of the four queens in the history of Esphere. I think Idealia was the fourth queen. There have been three queens before her. But they all had a short reign, natural disasters happened, and they all died unnatural deaths, according to Enoch (Were they also killed? :hmm: ). I wonder if I'll get to see the other queens in the series. Probably not, which is kinda sad since they've already been erased from history.

Chapter 70 just got released and it was difficult to read because it's about Clifford's brutal childhood. So a bit of a warning. And a bunch of swearing. I did my best to hold back.

So Octavia is dreaming about all this. Well, she thinks it was a dream but it felt strange. It was "from the point of view of a boy" with "black hair and dark blue eyes". Yeah, it's Clifford. He wasn't ten years old yet, but he "might be a little older because he does not seem to be well-nourished" (男の子……少年は、まだ十歳にもならないぐらい。栄養状態が良いようには思えないから、もしかするともう少し上の年かもしれない。). I have no idea what this means in terms of his age, but he's a young boy either way.

And young Clifford... was being beaten up (I cried right there and then. I hope the people who beat him up are dead.). But, the young Clifford wasn't resisting at all. Someone told him to hold his sword and fight, then someone else interrupts that it was enough and they can't waste any more time on "failed work" (how dare you!). They then add it's also bad for Nataniel and to do it now.

Then one of the men, who was kicking young Clifford, "grabbed the boy's chest and spit" (if you spat at him, may you burn in hell, you S.O.B). Then I guess the shitty man who was grabbing young Clifford said if it's because his wounds heal quickly, and in a few days there won't be any scars (he has one, asshole!), and said he envied young Clifford but he "must have talent, as well as the genetic makeup (体質)". He says that this is the last piece of advice which is to fight, but young Clifford flatly says no. The shitty man threw young Clifford's body to the ground.

Octavia, of course, couldn't stand it (that makes two of us. I hope Clifford killed all of them). She approached the man and tried to hit him with all her might but her hand passes through (You're a good girl, Octavia). She then asks herself if this was a dream and wouldn't she be the strongest (in the dream. Ig what she means is that, if it's her dream, she should be to manipulate it and hit him since, well, it's her dream. I mean, I get where she's coming from, but when I realize I'm in a dream and want to beat up a monster (don't ask) I'm not able to use my full power. Just putting it out there. >w>).

Nobody can see Octavia but she can feel young Clifford's thoughts.

Young Clifford gets up while coughing. He had no name (at the time. I wonder if they didn't give him a name, hence an individual identity, and Clifford was something that was associated with him much later). Young Clifford, however, "knew that he was considered disappointing because his birth was expected so that he would demonstrate exceptional fighting skills. But, young Clifford was afraid to wield the sword when he was able to wield it. He didn't want to fight.

Because of that, the shitty man said that he's disposal, and beat him up some more to stun him. He then tied a weight around young Clifford. Octavia couldn't make a sound even if she wanted to (because the dream wouldn't let her). Young Clifford was thrown into a lake and he was sinking. I think someone pushed him further into the water. Young Clifford was flailing his limbs around as he was suffering, but then calmed down (which is alarming). Octavia hope that he hung in there. Young Clifford then holds his breath and takes out the dagger hidden in his shoes, but he missed it and the dagger fell deeper into the water. Octavia tried to catch the dagger but her hand passed through once again, and she felt useless (How do you think I feel rn?). Fortunately, young Clifford's left hand managed to grab that dagger and cut the rope that was tied to his leg many times. As water entered his mouth, he swam to land and coughed wildly. Then, one of the assholes stepped on his right hand with a lot of force, while saying "What? You're still alive?" I'm confused about Young Clifford's reply because of translation issues. He says ii kara shin doke (いいから死んどけ), which Google Translate says means that it's okay because he (young Clifford) is dead. The asshole then asks if he doesn't want to die. In response to that, young Clifford stabbed the asshole's foot with the dagged in his left hand. And the asshole screams.

Octavia thinks that daggers shouldn't hurt people and, while she didn't want to understand, she understood young Clifford's heart was terribly calm. He was expecting someone to help him just as the people around him were expecting him to be talented. He wanted someone to intervene and reach out to him. But, when no one did, Clifford finally understood that help won't come. If he wanted to live, he had to do something himself. He had no choice but to carve the way himself, no matter what means he had to use (so this explains why Clifford was goal-oriented). He could only rely on himself. He realizes the cold, inorganic tools will not betray him and he can manipulate them as he wished. He now found it stupid that he was initially afraid to fight people.

Someone asks him what does he want to happen if he did this. Young Clifford replies that he will fight and show his talent. He gave up on anyone's help coming for him. Octavia thinks that, even though this was a dream, she felt a familiarity with his way of fighting. He looked overwhelmingly different from when he was being beaten up without resistance. I think Octavia takes in this difference, as well as his black hair, dark blue eyes, and a dagger he had (it was similar to the dagger Octavia borrowed from Clifford in the "Sky Room"), which makes her question if it's Clifford.

When she mutters his name, her voice comes out. She wonders (or asks) if he could hear her voice. This time, he did, as he coldly questions with full hostility, "Who's there?". He then finally saw Octavia, as his dark blue eyes were astonished. His mouth (or hers idk) then moved to say something, but Octavia woke up. Only until that point could Octavia remember her dream.

    EDIT:
There's a line in chapter 70 "A kind-looking child" (Yasashi-sōna ko de 優しそうな子で) which I'm pretty sure is associated with Clifford when he was young. This was before the assholes broke him.
Clifford, help came. It came late, but it came. In the form of Octavia (see why they complete each other!!!!!)

    Hugs for Clifford.
