That only adds to it, yes. Unless there is little sexual dimorphism (as is the case for many races in my setting) different roles make sense. And as long a race only has two (relevant) genders it will always benefit from not sending the birth giving one into dangerous locations. A woman can only be pregnant once at a time. A single man can get dozens of women pregnant...
