Discussion Is doing MTL good for learning the Japanese / chinese ?

in the past i used read manga or watch anime with english dictionary at my hand and this habit made me learned english even though with broken grammars. is doing MTL same like that ?

 

Real speech is always the way to go for me.
But if your only learning material are the reading kind, don't go by MTL alone.

I mean if you already got someone capable of translating it for you...


would it be 'Machine' translated?

 

English is comparitively easier language than languages like Chinese Japanese and Hindi where the number of characters are huge.
Also using MTL to learn these languages is seriously a no no while using a dictionary when trying to learn them will make you half dead....so you should just start learning from scratch through an app or through classes properly

For learning to read alone it's not too bad. Depends how you do it though, you'll probably learn faster if you use a CAT tool and make glossaries with terms for the stuff you MTL. Also when making the terms, use Chinese/Japanese keyboard to input them rather than copy and pasting from the raw.

Nah, I'm not trying to actively remember them, but if you read it often you can at least recognise often used words

Well as I've said earlier, learning the speech is good. I learn my English cause I decided to switch to Eng dub with Eng sub (we had a native language dub for the most part). After that reading became a hobby thanks to my dad. Now here I am.


Still sucking at my native languages

Lol we were the same. Years ago I would take a dictionary, put it by my side and read Naruto. I tried my best to learn how to construct sentences with correct grammar so that I could communicate with my fellow Naruto readers and occasionally bash One Piece fans.

let's try to list as many things wrong with learning via mtl and anime
1) are you gonna shout "kisama" and "nii-sama" out in public? Its rude and quite cringey respectively. Are you gonna speak in ancient Chinese like in those dramas and call people around you "shixiong"? people gonna look at you like you crazy.

2) Besides, MTL translates the whole sentence, not separate words, so you can't learn much from those.

3) Also, MTL is not a good translator of Chinese, especially the awkward and sometimes totally wrong translations.

4) Not only that, all the Chinese phrases seen in novels and heard in anime (that I read/watch) are nearly NEVER seen in real life.(unless you are Chinese living in china/Taiwan who speaks way to casually with friends)

5) Plus, seeing each Chinese word only once does not help you remember. (e.g. I only started spotting the difference between 隐 and 稳 a year ago.) So there's no point learning Chinese characters from novels unless they're like the names of the characters and you see them every sentence. But even so, its irrelevant.

6) And damn. Every phrase is slightly different. One moment you see this idiom meaning this meaning and the next you see another idiom meaning the same thing. It's hard to decipher even for a (not native) (but speaking since birth) (ethnic)Chinese person like me.

7) Oh yeah, the author of the story may be total bs at the language and just screwing up but you'll never know and maybe learn everything wrongly.

Conclusion: I'm pretty sure the dictionary is more useful, or maybe elementary textbooks (that come with pinyin)

*I probably derailed a lot and did not clarify enough, but please try to rebutt and let me train my argument skills?

gimme a secant(second) to correct my stand. Perhaps slice of life kind of novels (like the non-fantasy kind, plain ol' boring hooman life) has someone what applicable language use?

But if I come from a translator's POV, if you put the raws side-by-side with MTL to compare to get the rough meaning of the sentence, it helps by making it faster to rephrase the whole thing to translate. And that's if you can't read Chinese and feel like using the dictionary for every word is death.
