J-Novel's model goes something like so:
They license Light Novels, and then translate each volume in parts. The first part of the first volume is free to read by anyone, but if you want more access you need to get a monthly subscription, which lets you read any novel on their website.
However, once a Volume is finished and "Published", you can buy it through their site using credits (which comes with extra content), or through some other retailer. However, some time after a Volume is published, it's parts can't be read via subscription, meaning that the subscription only lets you read the early parts of a series, and the latest updates, that way you have to buy the ebook volumes in-between. That said, J-Novel occasionally has events where Subscribers can read all of their previous releases for a limited time.

If it was free the updates would show up on NU. Then again Baka tsuki is only added manually from time to time. Something about their site being old.

It's not so much that it's old, it's just that Baka-Tsuki's system doesn't lend itself towards being easy for NU's system. NU uses RSS feeds that blogs have for automatic updates of chapters and volumes, but Baka-Tsuki's RSS feed doesn't keep track of new chapter/volume updates; it keeps track of new edits, because BT is a wiki website for collaborative translation and editing. Basically it would be difficult to adapt NU's system to keep track of updates on BT.

No, They are just trial. Nothing is free in this world. If you see that something is free, There's 99.999% that there's a catch. So be careful dude. :)

I love the fact that they are paying the authors for the license. So the author is earning money from international readers.

I hate the fact that after you paid for the subscription, you still have to buy the ebook after its "expiration" period if you want to read it.

It's like subscribing to Netflix to watch a tv drama that Netflix made (House of Cards for example) but now that it expired, you have to buy it on Itunes/Amazon.
