In many CN novels when someone gets mad they say "Blank was so mad from anger he almost spit up blood" or something along those lines. Now in a novel I'm reading someone does spit up blood from losing a fight using only beasts (he never got hit so it's not an internal injury). So is this actually possible or just dramatic flair to add spice to a story?

It's like extreme anger or shame they can't do anything about I believe ... someone else will probably give a better answer

Generally a response of disbelief or something bad happened. Alternatively if the beasts died (I wouldn't know) maybe they were attached to him via soul and it wounded him too?

No spitting blood is the racial skill of young masters and people of large clans.

Spitting up blood is the short-form for describing an event so shocking that one's blood flow reverses, forcing the visible spitting of it out of the mouth. It's mainly for dramatic effect as it wouldn't naturally happen without some physical stimulus.

Spitting up blood is a skill, they practice it every day behind the words so they can do it when insults fly and they get rekt.

Yea. Since "spitting blood" is a link to internal body injury (Which you can't really do anything about) it's basically anger/regret.

It depends on what the situation is.
If it's in regards to the beast, just think of it like Yugioh, when the creatures take damage, then the players do too.

In regards to Xianxia novels, its more like... have you ever heard someone say, "If you worry about it too, you will give yourself an ulcer"?
So think of it as internalizing your feelings to the point that you can't contain it any more and you harm yourself.
It's pretty much a way to show extreme an emotion, in this case anger.

Sometimes it's an idiom. Sometimes it's literal.

no that spitting up blood is supposed to be just dramatic flair to add spice to a story (black face or green eyes) but in xanxia they literally do

I think they really do it, and mean it...
In this case for example, it sounds like he was so angry he almost got an internal injury, thus having to spit blood... something along those lines. There are also some examples where people are angry or shamed or something and they spit blood.

FS has always read it and taken that phrase literally or however it's used in the novel.

    That's an idiom.

In this case, usually it has a setting such as "invisible connection" between man and his beast. So whenever the beast heavily injured or dead, there is a negative feedback to the owner.

They lose control of their internal energy due to anger , hence the spitting blood .

Historically speaking (im not even sure if its true or not)

There was one instance where zhou yu was trapped and he got hit by an arrow. Before he fully recovered, he got aggitated by zhuge liang and his internal injuries act up again due to emotion and he spits up blood and died in the end.
I think thats the start of chinese spitting up blood...
