    I saw Gluttony in the name and I am tempted to read it although from reviews on other novels the translator leaves in Japanese phrases like "Ara"

    It has always been and will always be 'The Second Coming of Avarice' in my heart. So the similarity is very far.

    That is so not true.
    We just have more translators for Japanese novels so its easier to see crap
    Also, the novels usually translated are not commercialized and are essentially rough drafts and free to read unlike the Korean commercial model
    If you compare Japanese light novels with Korean novels then the quality isnt much different
    although admittedly the translators prefer perverted crap stories over action stories so they are more popular
    I am pretty sure you never saw a Korean novel called Getting Loli girls from Gachapon haha

    I would compare Alphapolis novels to Korean novels as a good benchmark

    this novel is nonsense. It suffers from all classic Japanese problems and is in no way similar to the Second Coming of Gluttony. It's not even isekai or a second chance. MC in this novel is a complete idiot

    Sure, let’s blame the translators for the uniquely Japanese ability to write a twenty volume semi-hentai cockblocker starring Jesus, the ultimate pacifist.

    And say what you will about “rough draft” web novels, but it’s not like the CN and KR webnovels they’re being compared to are shining paragons of quality and erudition. Nor does it seem like a whole lot changes when those web novels become light novels, with a few notable exceptions.

    Haha. I don't know about Korean novel censorship but lack of censorship in Japan is the reason stories push the envelope so much.
    I know Tower of Karma had a plot in with the protagonist ate his dead sister's flesh.

    My point about Korean novels is that translators are fewer so there is less variety on the types of novels translated.
    Admittedly, Adult visual novels shaped the interest of Japanese translators. So it is not a surprise that they translate novels that are similar in theme.
    Some admitted to learning Japanese specifically so they could consume visual novels

    Doesn’t surprise me. If you asked me to list the reasons I’d ever study Japanese, the pathetic state of the VN translation scene would make the top of the list. After that would be a select handful of novels, and then video games. No manga, since that’s translated fairly reliably - no surprise given how flipping slow the releases are. Same for anime.

    I have actually read both. I have to say that The Second Coming of Gluttony is a lot better. This novel is alright, but it does not do anything to stand out among other novels. The story is fairly typical and nothing special. It is not a bad read, per se, but it just is not nearly as good as The Second Coming of Gluttony.

    The funny thing is that I’d say the same about SCOG. When I first started reading it, the novel was flavor of the month and hyped to high heaven. I thought people were out of their dang minds. How many KR novels begin with some kind of tutorial stage? Reincarnator, Sovereign of Judgement, King of the Battlefield, etc, etc. Take your pick. Any one you choose is leagues better than SCOG’s pathetic single monster that immediately runs away from the MC and barely threatens anyone afterwards. And don’t even get me started on the initial translation for his super duper special class (which a god just gives him outright, and is not something he discovers or earns) being “magic spearman”. FFS that was just pathetic.

    Don’t get me wrong, the novel does get better and it does have its strong points. But after the first thirty chapters or so I was convinced it was the most typical, mediocre novel I’d read in a long time.

    Haha many praise it but to me it was just an average Japanese story written by a Korean.
    Similar with SFACG for Chinese novels with Japanese flavor.
    I am sure if I changed the country of origin to Japan, fewer people will read Second Coming of Avarice. It's just a bias for Korean novels since they are fewer

    I am hoping that you and @userunfriendly will be in the advisory board to help me choose novels to adapt into comics.
    Since ad revenue is more stable, I am looking at translating mystery and crime thrillers

    Where did you find mystery and crime thrillers?

    Y’know, I really want a detective noir story with a cultivation or system apocalypse setting. All these authors ever want to do is write the same kind of crap over and over. They never do anything really different with the worlds these novels have, and that’s a shame. ... Closest I’ve come is parts of Lord of the Mysteries.
