Resolved kid living in the subway

Hello everyone,
I recently remembered reading/watching a novel/anime (I don't remember the format, it could be very well a manga as it could be a movie) quiet a "long time ago" about a kid who live in the street, and one day he found a "room" in the underground between two station of the subway and decide on living in this room, he also at one point was working in a cafe or something like that for food and I think the end was a tragic one but I'm not too sure.
If anyone know where I could find this, or at least the title and can share it here I would be glad.

Well if anyone is interested I was able to find the book and it's:
Slake's Limbo written by Felice Holman and published in 1974

 

Damn, I was certain it would turn out to be a movie, so I tried searching for it, but google kept on giving links to subway sandwich restaurants. I'm glad you were able to find it, though
