I think Randolph is good at picking up subtle cues and isn't trapped by limiting himself to "common sense". He knows little in the way of specifics but he's well aware that Van is dangerous. He warned Duke Sauron about Van long before he'd ever met Van or those around him.

 

You don't need a democracy to rule fairly. The rules are either written down or unofficial. If you don't write the rules down, you can't fairly blame anyone for not knowing them. And you can't fairly enforce a rule nobody knows about.

Nobles could enforce the unwritten rules anyway, but that would be admitting how vile and corrupt they are.

 

That's right, and that's what they were going to do, until someone reminded them that they are meeting because they are afraid of Van's power/influence. They understand there is a good chance nobility "violence" won't work against them, and worst case, they will just get "strength violence" back at them, and nobility will do shit against that.

You seem to be treating "unwritten rules" as being like the law of the land. That's not what the term means. It's more like "social conventions" or "traditions". The effective context/meaning here is "if you don't want to earn the ire of powerful nobles then don't get ideas above your station and purchase a mansion in the poshest area when you're merely an honorary noble".

I'm not saying that the nobles have the right to be annoyed in such a scenario. It's cheap and petty. You'd think they'd be more concerned about having haunted mansions right next door to where they live and more motivated to do something about it before, instead of leaving it for over 100 years. But either way, Van and Darcia have painted a target on themselves by moving into the area.

There is a phrase that's common in Japan (and east Asia) that goes "the nail that sticks out is hammered down". Van and Darcia are currently sticking out like a sore thumb. But they seem to have expected it, unsurprisingly. They're already working on cleaning up the local riffraff, who would often be used by nobles behind the scenes. The guy who was threatening Van at the end probably had close ties to some noble though it's also possible he was simply part of a major criminal gang.

I think it's safe to say that Avalon is a going to die. The rest seems rather up in the air, including whether Avalon's soul will get broken - if he simply dies then Rodcorte would be able to put his stupid plan into action.

Well Vida's faction is aware of it now, that's why Rod is stuck as a god of Lambda.

 

To make it more specific, it's a decision by the 11 gods to make it a secret from mortals. Alda is breaking this decision when deciding to tell Heinz about it.

No they don't, Van has some idea that Rod is not able to check on them, but they don't know the specifics because Vida' faction is still respecting the old decision.

The details were also erased from the reincarnator's mind, the only reason Venus was able to trick Rod was because she seduced herself into the unconscious idea of changing to Vida races and then removed her own memories, like this when she arrived in front of Van, she felt she needed to change, understood she did something to herself, and acted on it.

The angels also won't tell this to the reincarnators they are helping.

Plus we got Vida's version of the reincarnation system (albeit not too polished but still exist nonetheless), already keeping in mind it's a roundabout for Vida's races only (and humans after Van starts tossing his guidance to each Vida kingdom).
