Basically something like Fire Emblem or Valkyria Chronicles. Is there any popular works like these? Madan no Ou to Vanadis is one as well.
You might know them but these come to mind (kind of what you are looking for, more or less): Youjo Senki CLAYMORE Koukaku Kidoutai Princess Resurrection Akami Ga Kill IS: Infinite Stratos
Never heard of the 3rd, 4th one only heard it but don't know about it. So far only 1st and 5th fits my criteria of a known female commander who has lead armies before, first being Tanya and the other being Esdeath. Ps. Why can't you just call it Ghost in the Shell?
All of them got badass female commanders, not only can they lead but also deliver quite the beating XD The only problem is that the plot might not exactly match the ones you mentioned, then again, its been some years since I watched them so, I don't remember much of their plot, give them a try, you might like them
If you aren't limiting yourself to eastern ones, then the Honor Harrington books by Weber(first one might be free online on Baen's site), or Sheepfarmer's Daughter (The Deed of Paksenarrion, #1) by Elizabeth Moon.
Maybe something like: Jormungand (arms dealer, but her bodyguards are more like PMCs) Haifuri Heavy Object Alderamin in the Sky Shin Sakura Taisen & it's Paris counterpart Cross Ange Black Lagoon (only Balalaika for the commander type) Also, @0000000 you better move this to "I am Looking For" thread
“It's Not Easy To Be A Man After Traveling To the Future”(Novel)(Awesome plot with age progression, school life, military, comedy, drama, action and adventure smacked together; the female protagonist is badass!!) “Youjo Senki/The Saga of Tanya the Evil”(Anime)(Main character however has the heart of a man but the body of a young girl, but that can work right?) “Knight's and Magic”(Anime)(The protagonist is basically a man but has an effeminate appearance, but that can work right??? ) “Koushin Koinu ni Koibumi wo”(Manga) (...this is Shoujo-ai, but still Military. ...can still work right???( ̄~ ̄;)) “Warlords of Sigrdrifa”(Anime, Manga, Light Novel) (Through two episodes, Warlords of Sigrdrifa is a mildly entertaining watch though considerably less as compared to other anime like Youjo Senki.)
Jeanne d' Arc is a very good video game that plays like Fire Emblem where you control a female commander as she fights back against the English. It is a fantasy retelling of historical events. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeanne_d'Arc_(video_game)
I'm always on the lookout for books with good female protagonists and I have a passion for military history so this topic is right up my valley. So onto the titles: Mulan Has No Elder Brother This is a retelling of the Mulan story. The standout parts about it are that it very much is about the camaraderie of military service and how well it deals with the uniqueness of military life in Northern Wei. This is a society that has more in common with the Mongols than China. For a Prosperous World The main selling points of this book aren't the military bits, but they still play a big role in the story and they matter a lot to the protagonist. In it, she is an immortal who ends up leading soldiers in several different eras. 燃烧的莫斯科 If you have any interest in World War II or an authentic portrayal of military command and control, this is the holy grail. I've read a lot of military fiction but none of them are as complete as this book. Everything from setting military HQs to the importance of terrain to how to deal with subordinates and superiors to fighting against impossible odds and a million other things.
