In the first chapter, from what I read. There was an arrangement made by the mc and ml's ancestors. They had married each other. They exchanged letters and such. Spoiler: Tiny bit The Mc's father finds the letter and approaches the duke in Hope's of marriage. Gets turned out. He approaches the king. King ignores it. Few years later due to a petty fight with the the Dutchy (the ML's family), he decided to seal the marriage. Mc is treated horribly by the upper echelons. But she is strong. that's all I read.

It does seems like he likes her but can’t show it because his mother control everything behind the scenes and has spies everywhere for him. Hence he use the 4 years of boarding school to distance himself, maybe planning something till he comes to power? Like the first thing he did after became the successor is to assign the coachman, who is a good driver and also very good worker, and much needed, for her and her family. He also gave her the carriage, which not only luxurious (elevated her in the eyes of others) but also engraved with his family’s crest so that others know that she’s under his protection. And it seems like he doesn’t know how she was treated in the Cavendish mansion (indicated by his angry “I will treat him however I want”/destroy him) he only knew after the coachman told him. And he gave her the big dog (trained to protect and fight even a pack of wolves) as a protection for her family (seems like his mother and the gang is planning something bad for her) and he bought the land where her cottage is (so others will not be able to have the right to bother her) and the engagement break up contract he was mentioning seems to be a way to protect her in the future. He also planned to move her and her family (for her it's being kicked out) which I think is to relocate her to somewhere safer. It seem like he kinda knew about his mom and the gang plans to control him by using marriage with the ex fiancée, they definitely are going to get rid of FL. Also it seems like he thought she doesn’t like him at all (well man, it’s not like she can read your mind. After 5 years of indifference, can’t blame her for giving the vibes). He seems like he’s jealous with the other guy who was her last partner. He’s pretending not to obviously look at her (I bet to avoid his mother’s suspicion) but actually is. All and all, I think both are in love with each other. But he has to pretend because he’s powerless. I have an inkling that his father’s condition has something to do with his mother. She probably poison him so she can have control of the family and ML knew that’s why he’s being careful. One wrong step and even his mother will off him just to stay in power and coveted the duke’s wealth.
I don't want to excuse the ML's actions but that's what I think after reaching the latest translated chapters too, especially when the part of his mother planning something bad with her gang was revealed
