Problaly the false is there because they didn't embarc on the quest against the calamity by an heroic spirit and more for some kind of personal gain, like mercenary work, since such a reward wasn't delivered they now turned against their first employers (that I believe is the hole of human non-demon territory) There is more to the 7 heroes tales that needs to be discovered.

 

The feeling I got was that it was something more complex than mere money.
And knowing the setting, it isn't the whole human race that hired them and didn't pay them, but the people in charge

 

I didn't meant money, just mercenary work, they wanted something in exchange for beating the calamity if they weren't promised that they wouldn't have cared for beating it. Well maybe was an assamble of Kings and Emperors and they promised some kind of power that later renegated the pay.
